Leave a note. A research and social innovation project about volunteers and their motivation

The basis of this thesis project there is a documented and in-depth analysis of the reality of volunteering and the reasons behind it, especially regardingyouth volunteering, with the aim of drawing the right guidelines for the development of a project that leverages on this theme. The focus is based on the main case study: the volunteer association “Handicap...Su la Testa!”, which has consolidated in Milan a reality of voluntary work based on young people: it will be observed and analyzed from within, in order to study their aggregative and motivational formulas. Starting from these bases, the research has been developed on two parallel tracks, that of the desk-research and that of the field research, in order to corverge the results into the problem definition. The research analyses the relationship between the volunteer’s motivation, his/her prosocial activity and the results that they achieve. From this analysis will emerge the opportunity to create a project of social innovation concerning young volunteers and their motivation, which is based on research and development of new methods and tools to make more effective and successful their prosocial activity.

Alla base di questo progetto di tesi vi è un’analisi documentata e approfondita della realtà del volontariato e delle motivazioni che stanno dietro di esso, in particolare del volontariato giovanile, con l’obiettivo di tracciare le giuste linee guida per lo sviluppo di un progetto che faccia leva su questo tema. Il focus progettuale è basato sul caso studio principale: l’associazione di volontariato “Handicap...Su la Testa!”, che ha consolidato a Milano una realtà di volontariato basata sui giovani: essa verrà osservata e analizzata dall’interno, per studiarne le formule aggregative e motivazionali. Partendo da queste basi, la ricerca si è quindi sviluppata su due binari paralleli, quello della desk-research e quello della ricerca sul campo, per poi farne convergere i risultati in modo da arrivare alla definizione del problema principale. La ricerca analizza il rapporto tra la motivazione del volontario, la sua attività prosociale e i risultati che ne conseguono. Da questa analisi emergerà l’opportunità di creare un progetto di innovazione sociale riguardante i giovani volontari e la loro motivazione, che si basa sulla ricerca e lo sviluppo di nuovi metodi e strumenti atti a rendere più efficace la loro attività prosociale.
