This thesis starts from exploring what is Italic and then experiencing it through the tracing of a specific Italic character. Matteo Thun is the Italic character in this thesis. He is an Italian architect and designer. I introduce Matteo Thun based on four different places, Bolzano, Salzburg, Firenze and Milano. Bolzano is his birthplace. The natural environment there has a strong influence on Thun. Salzburg and Firenze are places where he studied, and Milano is where he started his career. He now has a studio based on Milano. Then the thesis is focused on Thun’s works, from those in Memphis time to the recent ones in 2019 Milano Design Week. From these works, we can see some remarkable features, nature and craftsmanship. Thun is always trying to integrate perceptible nature into modern life elegantly by means of combining craftsmanship with design. This is a sparkling Italic point which can be used to inspire other designers and craftsmen, awaking the new Italic. The thesis continues with describing the new group to be waken up, craftamen. They use the local natural materials to express their ideas, but they don’t know much about the current trends and have a limited knowledge about new technology. They are seeking for breakthrough and new ways to inherit handicraft. We can see some global trend of handicraft and also the collaboration between craft and design. With the development of technology, there are new opportunities between craftsmanship and industry. In the following chapters, there will be some discussions about the traditional way to inherit handicraft and the inspiration from design museum and craft exhibition in order to better wake up the new Italic. In the concept, an inspiration room is set in the design factory to provide inspiration for craftsmen. The inspiration workbench called Prinspire is going to inspire the users from aspects of seeing, hearing and touching. At the end of the inspiration process, a list will be printed as the record of inspiration. The scenario, journey map and both the frontstage and backstage of the inspiration room are also included in the thesis. The Prinspire can help to build a network globally, building connection between design and craft, technology and skills, spreading the ideas and creating more chances for collaboration and new sparkles.
Questa tesi parte dall'esplorazione di ciò che è Italic e quindi traccia uno specifico carattere italiano, Matteo Thun. È un architetto e designer italiano. L'introduzione è basata su quattro luoghi diversi, Bolzano, Salisburgo, Firenze e Milano. Bolzano è la sua città natale. L'ambiente naturale ha una forte influenza su Thun. Salisburgo e Firenze sono luoghi in cui ha studiato, e Milano è dove ha iniziato la sua carriera. Ora ha uno studio basato su Milano. Quindi la tesi è incentrata sulle opere di Thun, da quelle di Memphis a quelle recenti del 2019 Milano Design Week.
