From the housewife of 1920 to the amateur cooks of 2000, in the next few years the machines will inhabit our kitchens, transforming us into "spectators" and making us renounce the control and pleasure of cooking. What are the skills and role of man in the era of automation? Which direction will technologies take in the kitchen? The thesis presented here starts from these questions, reconsidering the relationship between man and object within the kitchen space and proposing an alternative model of coexistence with tools, technological systems and traditional functions through an analysis of the evolution of the domestic fireplace and the changes in man's behaviour in this environment. The proposed model therefore denies man's role as a "spectator" of technology and home automation. The thesis, therefore, examines the latest trends in the kitchen sector and the contemporary technological panorama, re-evaluating some applications, finding new ones and trying to define alternative use dynamics and, more generally, a system composed of hardware and software that adapts to the contemporary lifestyle of the next few years. The project reconsiders and reinterprets the connection that was consolidated in the fifties of the last century between the functions and volumes of the furniture. This attempt will restore lightness to the hardware elements of the kitchen, a greater usable space available and a consequent adaptation of the furniture to the different activities that take place in the kitchen. The software elements, the functions, on the other hand, thus gain autonomy and self-referentiality, open up to new uses and functions, transforming themselves into objects that live in symbiosis with man and which, rather than replacing his actions and abilities, enhance them as artificial prostheses. Dalla massaia del 1920 ai cuochi amatoriali del 2000, siamo giunti oggi alla promessa che nei prossimi anni le macchine abiteranno le nostre cucine trasformandoci in “spettatori” e facendoci rinunciare al controllo e al piacere della cucina. Quali sono le competenze e il ruolo dell’uomo nell’era dell’automazione? Che direzione prenderanno le tecnologie in cucina? La tesi qui presentata muove da questi interrogativi riconsiderando le relazioni tra uomo e oggetto all’interno dello spazio cucina e proponendo un modello alternativo di convivenza con gli strumenti, gli impianti tecnologici e le funzioni tradizionali attraverso un’analisi sull’evoluzione del focolare domestico e sui mutamenti di comportamento dell’uomo in questo ambiente. Il modello proposto nega, quindi, il ruolo di “spettatore” dell’uomo nei confronti della tecnologia e dell’automazione domestica. La tesi, pertanto, prende in esame gli ultimi trend del settore cucina ed il panorama tecnologico contemporaneo rivalutando alcune applicazioni, trovandone di nuove e cercando di definire dinamiche d’uso alternative e, più in generale, un sistema composto da hardware e software che si adatti allo stile di vita contemporaneo e dei prossimi anni. Il progetto riconsidera e reinterpreta il legame che si è consolidato negli anni cinquanta del secolo scorso tra le funzioni e i volumi dell’arredo. Questo tentativo restituirà leggerezza agli elementi hardware della cucina, un maggiore spazio utile disponibile ed un conseguente adattamento degli arredi alle diverse attività che si svolgono in cucina. Gli elementi software, le funzioni, invece, guadagnano così autonomia e autoreferenzialità, si aprono a nuovi usi e funzionalità trasformandosi in oggetti che vivono in simbiosi con l’uomo e che, piuttosto che sostituire le sue azioni ed abilità, le potenziano come protesi artificiali.
