The musical box. An innovative use of the Cavallerizza court

The Ducal Palace of Mantua is a monument that has evolved over four centuries and that today still represents one of the major points of interest in the city. The Cortile della Cavallerizza was formed through a series of historical events up to its present form of a richly decorated courtyard, which is overlooked by several areas of the Palace, but without a defined use. For this reason, a study was made of the major cultural events and annual festivals including the “Mantova Chamber Music Festival”, an event that organizes a series of chamber music concerts in different locations in the historic center. The thesis is therefore based on the creation of a pavilion for chamber music in the courtyard. The historical aspects are analyzed, the different possible relationships between a new architecture and the ancient existent buildings, trying to find a system and the non-permanent construction material, which at any time allowed to bring the courtyard back to its original state. The designed pavilion fits into the existing courtyard, approaching but not leaning against the historic buildings, evoking a volumetry that existed in the 18th century and using ideal materials both for ease of assembly and disassembly, and for the acoustic point of view for its new main use.

Il Palazzo Ducale di Mantova è un monumento che si è evoluto nel corso di quattro secoli e che ancora oggi rappresenta uno dei maggiori punti d’interesse della città. Il Cortile della Cavallerizza si è formato attraverso una serie eventi storici fino alla sua forma odierna di cortile riccamente decorato, sul quale si affacciano diverse aree del Palazzo, ma questo cortile rimane ad oggi senza un utilizzo definito. Per questo, è stato fatto uno studio dei maggiori eventi culturali e festival annuali della città, tra i quali è stato scelto il “Mantova Chamber Music Festival”, manifestazione che organizza una serie di concerti di musica da camera in diverse location del centro storico. La tesi si basa quindi sull’ideazione di un padiglione per la musica da camera all’interno del cortile. Vengono analizzati gli aspetti storici, i diversi rapporti possibili tra una nuova architettura e l’esistente antico, cercando di trovare un sistema ed il materiale costruttivo più adatto all’inserimento di una costruzione temporanea. Il padiglione progettato, si inserisce all’interno dell’esistente, avvicinandosi ma non appoggiandosi agli edifici storici, rievocando una volumetria esistente nel ‘700 e utilizzando materiali, come il legno,ideali sia per la facilità di montaggio e smontaggio, sia dal punto di vista acustico per il suo nuovo principale utilizzo.
