Threshold space as a key notion to transform Como's Politeama

The Politama of Como is a cultural and historical building of the city. It was designed by the Italian architect Federico Frigerio and inaugurated on September 14, 1910. The building first closed in 1985. It reopened in 1988 but eventually and closed its doors in 2005 due to incompatibility with the new safety standards. It raises the question of how the building could be used again, in a different social context. The project carried out during the first year of Architecture Master studies has been the opportunity to work on reviving it. The design approach intends to be minimalistic. The project consists on working on three designated spaces in the original building to reshape the whole. To do so, the notion of the threshold spaces is introduced. The thesis is built on an empirical methodology, in order to reconsider the project and its approach. It develops a piece of knowledge on the building type of the Politeama, which is the study case, and the evolution of the city of Como before and after its construction. The notion of threshold spaces is then introduced and analyzed in detail, thanks to the works of architects and philosophers. It builds a reasoning on how threshold spaces are space-defining elements and how their use in the design is fundamental in every architectural work, as elements playing an important role in the experience of architecture. It is after all these researches that the Politeama project can be reconsidered, but, above all, explained in much more detail and better understood.

Il Politama di Como è un edificio storico e culturale della città. Fu progettato dall'architetto italiano Federico Frigerio e inaugurato il 14 settembre 1910. L'edificio è stato chiuso per la prima volta nel 1985. E stato riaperto nel 1988 ma alla fine ha chiuso i battenti nel 2005 a causa dell'incompatibilità con i nuovi standard di sicurezza. Solleva la questione di come l'edificio possa essere riutilizzato, in un diverso contesto sociale. Il progetto realizzato durante il primo anno di studi di Architettura Master è stata l'occasione per lavorare per rilanciarlo. L'approccio progettuale intende essere minimalista. Il progetto consiste nel lavorare su tre spazi designati nell'edificio originale per rimodellare il tutto. Per fare ciò, viene introdotta la nozione di spazi soglia. La tesi si basa su una metodologia empirica, al fine di riconsiderare il progetto e il suo approccio. Sviluppa una conoscenza del tipo di edificio del Politeama, che è il caso di studio, e dell'evoluzione della città di Como prima e dopo la sua costruzione. La nozione di spazi soglia viene quindi introdotta e analizzata in dettaglio, grazie alle opere di architetti e filosofi. Costruisce un ragionamento su come gli spazi soglia siano elementi che definiscono lo spazio e su come il loro uso nella progettazione sia fondamentale in ogni opera architettonica, in quanto elementi che svolgono un ruolo importante nell'esperienza dell'architettura. È dopo tutte queste ricerche che il progetto Politeama può essere riconsiderato, ma soprattutto spiegato in modo molto più dettagliato e meglio compreso.
