Atomization of fuel and mixing with combustion air are valuable tools for reducing pollutant emissions. A new type of atomizer equipped with a porous element has been designed. In literature it is possible to find some prototypes of injectors that exploit a porous matrix. Unlike others, in the prototype here analyzed air and water injection takes place directly inside the porous matrix. This solution should enhance mixing of the two fluids. Elements of different length and pore size were used, inserted in two different configurations of the injector. In one configuration water is injected into the side of the porous element and normally to the air flow, a second one is designed to inject water parallel to air flow. Pressure losses across the porous elements were measured, resulting greater with increasing matrix length and pore size. Forchheimer’s model applicability to data was tested. The model is not fully able to describe the pressure trends. Sprays, captured through high-speed imaging, showed an increase in spray angle as air flow decreased and water flow increased. Spray penetration has seen an increase with reduction of porous elements length. A qualitative drop size analysis was also carried out and it showed that it is strongly influenced by the formation of a coalescing region on the porous matrix output section. The region tends to disappear with increasing air flow, allowing formation of finer drops.

Abstract
The region tends to disappear with increasing air flow, allowing formation of finer drops.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
