Both online gaming and gambling markets are constantly expanding. In recent years, due to the diffusion of new technologies, the interaction between the two industries is becoming more and more important. In particular, companies belonging to the gambling sector operate in a significantly regulated domain and want to exploit the gaming sphere to enlarge their target. In turn, gaming industry makes use of some gambling characteristics to improve the game experience. As a result, what can be observed is a two-way convergence, in which companies of both markets try to expand beyond their boundaries, in order to benefit from the other’s influence. However, the spread of new gaming experiences and new business models resulting from the convergence has negative social impacts as well, as increased addiction and gambling problems affect many people and especially young players. For this reason, there are some controversial issues in term of legislation and governments question the need to regulate this phenomenon. Given the increasing complexity of these topics, the aim of this work is to propose a complete map of the convergence between different online game types and online gambling elements. The current analysis shows an interaction between the two worlds, which is carefully discussed in the present work. Furthermore, as the rapid development of technologies stimulates the expansion of both sectors (especially the online gaming industry), this thesis focuses on their role in this convergence trend.
Entrambi i mercati del gioco digitale e del gioco d’azzardo sono in continua espansione. In questi ultimi anni, grazie anche alla diffusione di nuove tecnologie, l’interazione tra le due industrie si fa sempre più importante. In particolare, le aziende nel settore del gioco d’azzardo, molto regolamentato a livello normativo, tendono ad espandersi nel mondo del gioco digitale per ampliare il proprio target. Viceversa, l’industria del gioco online utilizza alcune caratteristiche tipiche del gioco d’azzardo per migliorare l’esperienza di gioco. Di conseguenza, si sta osservando una convergenza bilaterale, in cui le aziende di entrambi i mercati cercano di espandersi oltre i propri confini per beneficiare delle caratteristiche dell’altro settore. La diffusione di nuove logiche di gioco e di nuovi modelli di business derivanti dalla convergenza, tuttavia, comporta anche impatti negativi a livello sociale, con maggiori problemi collegati alla dipendenza e al gioco patologico che interessano numerose persone e in particolar modo i più giovani. Pertanto, in ambito normativo e legislativo, vi sono alcune questioni molto dibattute, con i governi e i vari enti che si interrogano riguardo alla necessità di regolare questo fenomeno. Considerata la crescente complessità di questi temi, questo lavoro si pone come obiettivo di proporre una completa mappatura della convergenza tra le diverse offerte di gioco online ed elementi d’azzardo online. L’analisi svolta ha rilevato un’interazione e una convergenza tra i due mondi, il cui sviluppo è descritto nell’elaborato. Inoltre, poiché il rapido sviluppo delle tecnologie stimola l’espansione di entrambi i settori, soprattutto dell’industria del gioco online, questo elaborato pone l’attenzione sul ruolo che esse hanno in questo processo di convergenza.
