Given the acceleration of the pace of technological development characterizing the last decades, the need of anticipating technological breakthrough with the supports of dedicated processes arose for both governmental and business entities. Focusing on the business context, this study aims at investigating the strategic processes that Italian companies put in place when defining their Future Oriented Technology Analysis (FTA) strategy. In this context, FTA is defined as a systematic process that detect emerging technologies and their characteristics and evaluate their potential impact. Building on the best practices suggested by the literature, this thesis aims to answer to the following research question: Is the Italian scenario aligned with the state-of-the-art processes dedicated to the analysis of future technologies? Based on a review of the literature, a taxonomy of the main processes designed to identify, predict or create technological innovation was developed. The theoretical background enabled the identification of relationships between those processes and the development of a theoretical framework that classifies the different practices according to their objectives and highlights the main interactions. The empirical analysis is based on a qualitative research approach. Case studies have been developed, following a structured schema: first of all, a sample of 10 companies have been selected on the basis of the R&D expenditure and R&D intensity of the top players of the Italian industrial scenario. These companies were eligible for an interview based on a questionnaire for data collection. The interviews with R&D chiefs and managers aimed at grasping information regarding the FTA processes within the considered business entities. Eventually, a thorough overview regarding the interviewed companies has been provided, illustrating the key findings for each study case, useful for a clear comprehension of the FTA activities across the selected Italian players and their possible linkages or incongruencies with the taxonomy proposed. The analysis of the case studies demonstrated that a substantial gap between the FTA processes described by the literature and the actual practices adopted by Italian companies. The results indicated that the development of these practices in the Italian scenario is still lagging and that the strategic relevance of the processes is still low. Moreover, a further significant finding is represented by the absence of correlation between the R&D investments and the implementation of the processes under discussion. Further research is needed to investigate the development of the FTA processes in future years and to eventually determine relationship between the sectors and the relevance of these practices.

Abstract
Further research is needed to investigate the development of the FTA processes in future years and to eventually determine relationship between the sectors and the relevance of these practices.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
