Over the years, the most significant changes in manufacturing systems have been linked to the different industrial revolutions. Since 2015, the fourth industrial revolution has been associated with the digital transformation that has been experienced by several companies in different industries and which is related to the development of digital capabilities, the construction of a collaborative ecosystems and usage of data as a valuable asset. With this revolution, the concept of Industry 4.0 has emerged, alongside with different areas of application and tools that support the digital transformation. One of these areas is Logistics (Rojko, 2017), where the use of Information and Communication Technologies such as Transportation Management Systems (TMS) allow companies to have a greater control over operations and increase the efficiency of the transformation. This thesis work aims at identifying the characteristics that a TMS must have in order to work within a context of Logistics 4.0 and support the digital transformation. After a literature review, a framework for a TMS 4.0 was developed and a business case was studied with the objective to evaluate a vendor’s TMS complexity and the benefits of its implementation.
Nel corso degli anni, i cambiamenti più significativi nei sistemi di produzione sono stati collegati alle diverse rivoluzioni industriali. Dal 2015, la quarta rivoluzione industriale è stata associata alla digital transformation che è stata sperimentata da diverse aziende in diversi settori, e che è legata allo sviluppo di capacità digitali, alla costruzione di ecosistemi collaborativi e all'utilizzo dei dati come valuable asset. Con questa rivoluzione nasce il concetto di Industria 4.0, insieme a diverse aree di applicazione e strumenti che supportano la digital transformation. Una di queste aree è la logistica (Rojko, 2017), in cui l'uso di tecnologie di informazione e comunicazione come il Transportation Management System (TMS) consente alle aziende di avere un maggiore controllo sulle operazioni e aumentare l'efficienza della trasformazione. Questo lavoro di tesi mira a identificare le caratteristiche che un TMS deve avere per funzionare in un contesto di Logistica 4.0 e supportare la digital transformation. Dopo una revisione della letteratura, è stato sviluppato un framework per un TMS 4.0 ed è stato studiato un caso aziendale con l'obiettivo di valutare la complessità del TMS di un fornitore specifico e i vantaggi della sua implementazione.
