The intention of this work of thesis is to analyse the economic environment in the market of the network management systems through the most recent software applications developed, with particular focus on operational cost reduction that software tools can enable. The content will provide the reader with detailed information about Cisco’s network management system, the Evolved Programmable Network Manager, as well as the benchmarking with the competitors. The main source used for this analysis is the research carried out by Cooperson, D. and Yigit, G. (2018), and direct interviews with a Cisco product manager and a former network operator. Analysing and showing the economic situation of the telecommunications sector, the paper will focus on the tools that telecommunications service providers can use to optimize their network. In particular, the innovative and advanced features of the Cisco network management software (EPNM) will be displayed. A cost-benefit analysis of the software will be provided from both the points of view of the service provider and the vendor, these data are however the result of modelling and not of reality, being sensitive data. Subsequently it will discuss about the technologies available in the near future and the automation race. The impulse to reduce operating costs of network operators and the need of increasing the quality and effectiveness of the telecom networks led to the birth of a new market. Large groups such as Cisco, Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson have begun to develop new network management systems, foreseeing a considerable competitive advantage over competitors who do not innovate in this area.
In questa tesi si mostra in generale il sistema di gestione del network attraverso i più recenti Network Management System e Element Management System. In particolare, verrà analizzato il Management software ideato da Cisco, il cosiddetto Evolved Programmable Network Manager, e verrà fatta un analisi di benchmarking con i principali concorrenti, la principale fonte utilizzata per questa analisi sono la ricerca effettuata da Cooperson, D. and Yigit, G. (2018), e interviste dirette a un product manager di Cisco e ad un ex operatore di rete. Analizzando e mostrando la situazione generale del settore delle telecomunicazioni, l’elaborato si concentrerà sugli strumenti che i service provider delle telecomunicazioni hanno a disposizione per ottimizzare la propria rete. In particolare, verranno visualizzate le funzionalità innovative ed evolute del software di gestione della rete Cisco (EPNM). Verrà fornita un’analisi costi benefici del software dal punto di vista del service provider e del vendor, questi dati sono però frutto di modellizzazione e non della realtà, trattandosi di dati sensibili. Successivamente si tratterà sulle tecnologie a disposizione nel prossimo futuro e della corsa all’automazione. L'impulso di ridurre i costi operativi e la necessità di aumentare la qualità e l'efficacia della rete hanno portato alla nascita di un nuovo mercato. Grandi gruppi come Cisco, Huawei, Nokia e Ericsson hanno iniziato a sviluppare nuovi sistemi di gestione di rete, prevedendo un vantaggio competitivo sui competitor che non si rinnoveranno.
