Purpose. At the basis of this thesis project there is the analysis of the financial services world, with particular focus on the great revolution it has faced in recent years, the digital transformation, which began with the introduction of the Internet and increasingly became part of everyday life and how the balances have changed within this sector. In particular, the objective of this thesis is to provide the widest possible view of the potential future of banks and the challenge (disruption) that shared services will face: what will be the new balances, who will be new market players, what will be the best strategies and new business models to adopt, how institutions have reacted to the new scenario and what decisions they have taken or will take in order to remain competitive within the market. Motivations. The reasons that prompted me to go into this subject are twofold in nature. On the one hand, the internship experience at Accenture Consulting, particularly in the Financial Services area, which, thanks to the team in which I was placed, has helped me growing day by day and, at the same time, has raised in me the interest in the financial services world. On the other hand, the passion for technological innovation, developed during my last university studies, attending Digital Business and Market Innovation stream. Methodology. The methodology is based on an initial definition of the digital transformation concept and a subsequent in-depth analysis of how the phenomenon impacts the Italian society and then the financial services sector. Then, it has been conducted the financial services analysis, in order to understand the current level of innovation and the future projects of each group regarding digital transformation and customer involvement. Furthermore, relying on information founded on Strategy and Consulting Companies’ papers, it has been carried out an investigation of the possible strategies and business models for banks to adopt in a context dominated by digital transformation. Finally, a web-based research about shared services world has been realized and then, a case study, (that is part of a wider project in which two Companies are involved) sustained by an interview with a CEO of a company operating in the underlying sector, has been provided in order to give more value to the overall analysis. Findings. The main finding is that, observing the moves and strategic business choices of Italian players, the financial services sector seems to have understood the importance of the digital transformation and the relative importance in increasing the customer involvement. However, it is mainly focused on the improvement of the internal efficiency as the digital implementation seems to be related only to major financial institutions, considering both the total assets and their presence in Italy (and of course their reputation); but it has been discovered that even small-medium banks can find, thanks to shared services, their way to deal with the challenge of digital transformation. Therefore, the final result could be a win-win game for both banks and shared services in Italy.
Scopo.
