In a fast-moving world where everything is changing too quickly, the word “innovation” is at the beginning of nowadays vocabulary. Technological evolution is proceeding at a great pace, new things are continuously improved and the new immediately becomes old in the following day. In this context, a firm needs to scout new ideas and more radical innovations are needed. Besides the difficulties in finding innovative directions to pursue, what is even harder is to make the new solution successful on the market and get the new idea adopted. Many studies aim at understanding the complex world of innovation and several researches are willing to explore the difficult path of the diffusion of innovation. After a theoretical review of the innovation context, what emerges is a sort of file rouge that sew together all the different areas of the literature: the interplays of different actors in the innovation environment are considered important from radical innovation theory to diffusion and network theory. Our research is mainly focused on one dimension of innovation that is the ecosystem around an innovating firm. The relevance of users’ involvement for radical innovation has been studied in the literature, the role of “interpreters” for propelling radical changes has been highlighted, the importance of universities and government is stressed for advancing researches. Though, a deeper study of each single actor of the ecosystem is not completely fulfilled. Our aim is to investigate the dynamics of interaction among players and, in particular, we want to understand qualitatively: (i) how each single actor influences the firm’s development of innovative products; (ii) which actor is the most crucial for the development of the new product; (iii) if any relations between actors and Rogers’ innovation attributes exist. An empirical research in the Smart Home sector, based on a six-case-study approach, was conducted to reach our goal. Finally, some results come in accordance with the literature and some other show deviations from standard behaviors. However, interesting insights of the dynamics between the firm and the ecosystem and a qualitative correlation between actors and innovation attributes are emerging. Moreover, several useful implications both for practitioners and researchers are suggested and future possible research directions are set.

Abstract
Moreover, several useful implications both for practitioners and researchers are suggested and future possible research directions are set.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
