Personality, mood and impacts on reactions to music. An exploratory study

Pink Floyd’s album “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973) is a progressive rock masterpiece that hit the record of 1100+ weeks in the top LP sales over the last 40 years. The objective of this work is to analyze the relationship between intended emotions and felt emotions in human listeners, taking also into account an individual's characteristics such as personality and mood. The analysis is based on a literature review and is supported by data gathered through a survey conducted online. Participants (208) answered questions including demographic characteristics, short personality test, an ex-ante mood, and ex-post mood situation. Additionally, they self-rated the level of five discrete emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear and tenderness/peace) as well as the level of pleasure and activation they felt when being exposed to 15 musical stimuli. As a comparable to the above-mentioned album, it has been selected the Beatles' album “Sgt. Pepper Lonely Club Band” due its analogous success, the correspondence of the music genre and the popularity of the band. The musical stimuli have been extracted by all the 10 songs of the Pink Floyd’s album plus 5 songs of the Beatles’ one. Initially, each excerpt was categorized by the authors to one emotion based on a structural analysis of musical features made by a musician and the intended emotions have been found in the literature. The analysis of emotions relied on two approaches: the first one is based on a categorical approach (Juslin and Laukka, 2004) and the second one on a dimensional approach, corresponding to the circumplex model of affect by Russell (1980).

L'album dei Pink Floyd "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973) è un capolavoro del rock progressivo che ha ottenuto il record di oltre 1100 settimane in cima alle classifiche degli LP più venduti negli ultimi 40 anni. L'obiettivo di questo lavoro è analizzare la relazione tra le emozioni previste e le emozioni vissute negli ascoltatori, tenendo conto delle caratteristiche di ciascun individuo come la personalità e l'umore. L'analisi si basa su una revisione della letteratura ed è supportata dai dati raccolti attraverso un sondaggio online. I partecipanti (208) hanno risposto a domande che includevano caratteristiche demografiche, un piccolo test della personalità, lo stato d'animo ex-ante ed ex-post. Inoltre, gli intervistati hanno auto-valutato il livello di cinque emozioni discrete (felicità, tristezza, rabbia, paura e tenerezza/pace), nonché il livello di piacere e attivazione che hanno provato durante l’esposizione a 15 stimoli musicali. Come comparazione rispetto all'album sopra menzionato, è stato selezionato l'album dei Beatles "Sgt. Pepper Lonely Club Band” per il suo successo equiparabile, la somiglianza del genere musicale e la popolarità della band. Gli stimoli musicali sono stati estratti da tutte e 10 le canzoni dell'album dei Pink Floyd più 5 canzoni di quello dei Beatles. Inizialmente, ogni estratto è stato classificato dagli autori in base a un'emozione fondata su un'analisi strutturale delle caratteristiche musicali fatta da un musicista ed le emozioni previste sono state trovate in letteratura.. L'analisi delle emozioni è fondata su due approcci: il primo si basa su un approccio categorico (Juslin e Laukka, 2004) e il secondo su un approccio dimensionale che si basa sul “circumplex model of affect “ di Russell (1980).
