The purpose of the thesis is figure out the approach to appropriately manage the inter-firm knowledge sharing when a buying company involves a supplier in its new product development (NPD) project. In strongly competitive markets today, supplier involvement is becoming an increasingly important strategy for a company to achieve better NPD performances. As a knowledge-intensive activity, the success of NPD depends largely on the success management of knowledge sharing activities. However these activities are no easy to manage especially in the context of collaborative NPD projects. The preliminary literature revealed that few current studies have dedicated to a systematic analysis on the relations among the knowledge sharing variables and how a company can improve knowledge sharing with supplier in NPD projects. To answer the three research questions identified based on the research gaps, a systematic literature review is carried out. It helps understand the critical issues in supplier involvement and knowledge sharing and identifies the main knowledge sharing problems and the resolving mechanisms. To test the findings and acquire more information in real-life practice, the empirical research is performed within the context of new engine development in the automotive industry. Based on the selection criteria, two case study interviews are respectively conducted with an auto manufacturing company and an engine supplying company. After the in-depth analysis of the case study, it is found that only some of the knowledge sharing problems are considered relevant in these two companies while all the knowledge sharing mechanisms are important and function as a whole to help alleviate the problems and improve NPD performances. The case study also reveals that the steps to take before the actual integration of the supplier are crucial as well and can have an impact on knowledge sharing. The main contribution of this thesis is a conceptual framework developed based on both the findings of case study and the state of art. It intends to generate an easily comprehensible and flexible basic structure regarding how to facilitate knowledge sharing when a supplier is involved in a buying company’s NPD project. The pre-involvement measures and knowledge sharing mechanisms are defined and elaborated, which are applied before supplier integration and during collaboration, helping ease the identified knowledge sharing problems. The framework is built within specific applicable context while further discussion and reasonable propositions are made as well, trying to discover the possible situation in changing environments and conditions.

Abstract
The framework is built within specific applicable context while further discussion and reasonable propositions are made as well, trying to discover the possible situation in changing environments and conditions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
