Only OHS outcomes from OHS interventions ? From a systematic literature review, a novel model for empirical analysis

Work-related injuries and diseases have an inestimable social impact, since they affect the lives of workers, but also of enterprises, and therefore Occupational Health and Safety has become an extremely important topic for the management of a company. To improve working conditions, it is necessary to carry out interventions that allow for a safer environment. However, these interventions are often considered as mere mandatory costs required by the law with limited, if not negative, impacts on productivity and other operational performance of the company. The situation is particularly critical in Small and Medium Enterprises, which will therefore be the focus of empirical research. The purpose of the thesis is therefore to identify the links that exist between the company's performance and safety, in order to understand how the interventions must be actually evaluated, not only in terms of risk reduction but considering the 360° impact on the company. In a specular way, the aim is also to understand how an intervention that is designed for other areas of the company can bring safety benefits. A systematic review of the literature was therefore carried out in order to understand the impact of Occupational Health and Safety interventions on the operational performance of the company and that of productive interventions on safety, clarify the status quo of the research and identify the gaps still open. On the basis of what was found in the literature, a model was then developed to perform an analysis within the companies to understand the interactions and thus obtain a complete understanding of the intervention, framing the environment in which it was implemented and taking considering all the events, people and processes useful for the description of the analysis. An empirical investigation was then conducted, based on the Case Study research methodology, in order to analyze interventions according to the developed model to understand the situation and better comprehend any implications. The collection of empirical case studies has helped to highlight new perspectives on the subject of Occupational Health and Safety, providing suggestions and insights to practitioners, academic researchers and policy makers in order to obtain better results from the implementation of safety interventions.

Gli infortuni e le malattie professionali hanno un impatto sociale inestimabile, dal momento che influenzano la vita dei lavoratori, ma anche delle imprese, e quindi la Salute e Sicurezza sul Lavoro è diventata un argomento estremamente importante per la gestione di un'azienda. Per migliorare le condizioni di lavoro, è necessario effettuare interventi che consentano di avere un ambiente più sicuro. Tuttavia, questi interventi sono spesso considerati come puri costi obbligatori per legge con impatti limitati, se non negativi, sulla produttività e sulle altre prestazioni operative dell'azienda. La situazione è particolarmente critica nelle Piccole e Medie Imprese, che saranno dunque il focus della ricerca empirica. Lo scopo della tesi è dunque quello di identificare i legami che esistono tra le prestazioni dell’azienda e la sicurezza, per capire come gli interventi debbano essere realmente valutati non solo in termini di riduzione del rischio ma anche come impatto a 360° sull’azienda. Specularmente, si vuole comprendere come un intervento che è pensato per altre aree dell’azienda possa portare benefici a livello di sicurezza. È stata quindi effettuata una revisione sistematica della letteratura allo scopo di comprendere l'impatto degli interventi di Salute e Sicurezza sul Lavoro sulle performance operative dell'azienda e quello degli interventi produttivi sulla sicurezza, chiarire lo status quo della ricerca e identificare le lacune ancora aperte. Sulla base di quanto trovato nella letteratura, è stato quindi sviluppato un modello per poter effettuare un’analisi all’interno delle aziende per capire le interazioni ed ottenere quindi una completa comprensione dell'intervento, inquadrando l'ambiente in cui è stato implementato e tenendo in considerazione tutti gli eventi, le persone e i processi utili alla descrizione dell'analisi. È stata quindi condotta un'indagine empirica, basata sulla metodologia di ricerca del Case Study, al fine di analizzare gli interventi secondo il modello sviluppato per comprendere la situazione e capire meglio eventuali implicazioni. La raccolta di Case Study empirici, ha contribuito a evidenziare nuove prospettive sul tema della Salute e Sicurezza sul Lavoro, fornendo suggerimenti e approfondimenti a professionisti, ricercatori accademici e legislatori al fine di ottenere migliori risultati dall'attuazione degli interventi di sicurezza.
