Shell Eco-marathon is a competition organized by the Royal Dutch Shell® company, involving teams from major universities and research institutes worldwide. The aim of the competition is to build a high energy efficiency vehicle, which has to run a predetermined number of laps, along an urban circuit, consuming the least amount of energy. The Mechanical Engineering Department of Politecnico di Milano takes part to the competition since 2005. The present thesis deals with the design and realization of the new vehicle that took part to the competition in 2019, and in particular the main subject regards the design of the chassis. Two different solutions are presented: a space frame and a spatial frame. The design process is performed by means of analytical and numerical approaches, aimed at minimizing mass and achieving acceptable levels of strength and stiffness. Moreover, the chassis has been designed in compliance with the regulations of the competition. The description of the production process of the chosen frame solution is also reported.
