The thesis project is part of “Riformare Periferie 2019” and “Reinventing Cities 2019” programmes with the aim of formulating transformation hypotheses for disused or abandoned public spaces scattered throughout the Milanese territory. The study area is located in the west of Milan, with a proposal for the regeneration of underused or abandoned portions of urban fabric in the San Siro area; in particular, the focus is on the redevelopment of the De Montel Stable and the spaces in front of the Meazza stadium. The proposal comes from the reading of the urban context, characterized by multiple conditions of morphological and typological fragmentation, in which the role of one of the main features of this area is investigated: the boundary. In fact, the area of San Siro, and in particular the route of Via Harar, is characterized by a combination of spatially defined places, where the boundary is the actor of the division and the relationship between inside and outside, configuring itself to all intents and purposes as the “material” of the urban composition. The presence of single-functional sports fences, which internalize and exclude the use of spaces from the dynamics and urban flows, as well as the theme of the reuse of the structure of the Stables, has led to a design hypothesis that relates the different parts of the city, through a reflection of reinterpretation and modification of the border. The boundary is intended not as an entity of physical perimeter of a place but as a space, no longer a line but a critical “distance” to define the area. The aim is to exclude the boundary from its function as a barrier and read it as an element capable of putting into communication the entities of which it is, in fact, the limit. The project redefines the complex of the Stables through the reuse and reinterpretation of the historical structure, with a particular attention to the redefinition of the public space, with the intention of keeping the unitary vocation of the place: the sport. The aim is to focus on the theme of the boundary as a construction of "rooms" that modify the contexts, giving shape to new places and interpreting the relationship between the new and the existing. The connection and the linking of the fragmented parts are operated through a main path that is configured like a spine and that distributes on its sides the architectural elements inserted in the composition, determining a sequence of rooms inhabited according to different sections. It will then be included facilities dedicated to team sports - basketball, tennis, volleyball - as well as facilities suitable for acrobatic and freestyle sports, especially with skateboarding, bmx bike or free body. The project defines the urban space and organizes it according to an ordering principle that The public space is redesigned to establish new relationships with the on-board fabrics, integrating the new space with the existing ones, working on distances and proximity and creating spaces related to the urban life of the neighbourhood and the citizen in general. The historical liberty De Montel Stable regains its architectural individuality and becomes a temporary structure for athletes, through a project that aims at flexibility in space and time of the building itself.
