H-Vimapp. Interactive historical mapping and data representation of built heritage for multipurpose use created with QGIS : the case of historical centre of Vimercate

Vimercate is a city located in the province Monza and Brianza, not far away from Milan and Monza. This excellent position has been very important since the way back to the Roman period when Vimercate was founded. Such an important historical development of the city needs to have special attention in analyzing its urban core. Nevertheless, Vimercate only recently got the attention of the individual researchers and institutions for its protection and investigation. More recently one of the biggest drivers in developing the awareness and interest in Vimercate is Politecnico di Milano, particularly the course of Preservation studio in the Master degree in Architecture and other researches from this academic institution. The focus was mainly on the architectural scale, that puts the single monument in front of the urban scope. The project intends to reverse the situation, putting the urban scale and the town as a whole in the first place. Observing the wider image will provide a creating of the policies and strategies over this historically significant city, for its elementary understanding, protection and maintaining. Many of relevant information are collected, but they have remained until now just the pieces of the complete appearance of Vimercate. Therefore, this project tends to create one unique database of the built heritage of Vimercate, first as a city and then as a single object, all equally important to create a proper system in service to all stakeholders: from the municipality, university, students to the locals and single enthusiast. The database is imagined as an interactive map, that can educate, but also to inform and point to the ways of reconstruction and protection. The map can provide all historical and contemporary facts, documentation, photos and projects, creating a timeline easier to manage and to comprehend. Software used for this project is free and open QGIS program, but in the future the map should be also accessible online.

Vimercate è una città situata nella provincia di Monza e Brianza, non lontano da Milano e Monza. Questa eccellente posizione è stata molto importante sin dal ritorno al periodo romano quando fu fondata Vimercate. Un così importante sviluppo storico della città deve avere un'attenzione speciale nell'analisi del suo nucleo urbano. Tuttavia, Vimercate solo recentemente ha attirato l'attenzione dei singoli ricercatori e istituzioni per la sua protezione e indagine. Più recentemente uno dei maggiori driver nello sviluppo della consapevolezza e dell'interesse per Vimercate è il Politecnico di Milano, in particolare il corso di Conservation Studio nel Master in Architettura e altre ricerche da questa istituzione accademica. L'attenzione si è concentrata principalmente sulla scala architettonica, che pone il monumento unico di fronte all'ambito urbano. Il progetto intende invertire la situazione, mettendo al primo posto la scala urbana e la città nel suo insieme. Osservare l'immagine più ampia fornirà una creazione delle politiche e delle strategie su questa città storicamente significativa, per la sua comprensione elementare, protezione e mantenimento. Molte delle informazioni rilevanti vengono raccolte, ma fino ad ora sono rimaste solo le parti dell'aspetto completo di Vimercate. Pertanto, questo progetto tende a creare un database unico del patrimonio costruito di Vimercate, prima come città e poi come singolo oggetto, tutti ugualmente importanti per creare un sistema adeguato in servizio a tutti gli stakeholder: dal comune, dall'università, dagli studenti a la gente del posto e il solo entusiasta. Il database è immaginato come una mappa interattiva, in grado di educare, ma anche di informare e indicare i modi di ricostruzione e protezione. La mappa può fornire tutti i fatti, la documentazione, le foto e i progetti storici e contemporanei, creando una sequenza temporale più facile da gestire e comprendere. Il software utilizzato per questo progetto è un programma QGIS gratuito e aperto, ma in futuro la mappa dovrebbe essere accessibile anche online.
