Facade refinement. Centro Romana

The initial starting point of this thesis work will be the study of an essen- tial building component in architecture: the façade. It will emphasize of the façades of middle-class post-war residential buildings that the majority nowadays are in bad conditions, neglected and need some intervention. The study will focus on a post-war residential building, part of a complex of ten edifices, in Viale Sabotino, 19 in Porta Romana, Milan and will explore different ways of one-sided façade intervention and enhancement for a better quality of living. the building is considered as a special one in the neighborhood since the typology of its flats is different than the usual Mil- anese post-war houses. The approach in the work will be to highlight the importance of two main constituents of the façade: windows and balco- nies, and how those elements, forming the openings, can be elevated to im- prove the quality of living in a building, improve human’s experience, attract people, and enhance as well its external shape by showing case studies of post-war Milanese buildings and new contemporary refurbishment case studies. The work will show the main problem of the façade in post-war housing to then deal with the different types of windows and balconies and their history and importance to finally apply the new treatment not only to the studied building but also to the whole complex of Centro Romana and other Milanese post-war residential units. The interventions that will be applied to the one-sided façades in the building are new lightweight extensions, glazed balconies, and protruding equipped furnished windows. The work will be on the north, east, and south elevation, since the west elevation is intersected with another building in the complex. This research will explain the existing problems of the façades, the new treatments that can be applied, the use of each treatment and the reason of that use based on similar projects.

Il punto di partenza iniziale di questo lavoro di tesi sarà lo studio di una componente essenziale dell'edificio in architettura: la facciata. Enfatizzerà le facciate degli edifici residenziali del dopoguerra della classe media che la maggioranza al giorno d'oggi è in cattive condizioni, trascurata e necessita di un intervento. Lo studio si concentrerà su un edificio residenziale del dopoguerra, parte di un complesso di dieci edifici, in Viale Sabotino, 19 a Porta Romana, Milano e esplorerà diversi modi di intervento e miglioramento della facciata unilaterale per una migliore qualità della vita. l'edificio è considerato speciale nel quartiere in quanto la tipologia dei suoi appartamenti è diversa dalle solite case postbelliche milanesi. L'approccio nel lavoro sarà quello di evidenziare l'importanza di due componenti principali della facciata: finestre e balconi e come tali elementi, che formano le aperture, possono essere elevati per migliorare la qualità della vita in un edificio, migliorare l'esperienza umana, attirare le persone e migliorare anche la sua forma esterna mostrando casi studio di edifici milanesi del dopoguerra e nuovi casi studio di rinnovamento contemporaneo. Il lavoro mostrerà il problema principale della facciata negli alloggi del dopoguerra per poi affrontare i diversi tipi di finestre e balconi e la loro storia e importanza per applicare finalmente il nuovo trattamento non solo all'edificio studiato ma anche all'intero complesso di Centro Romana e altre unità abitative postbelliche milanesi. Gli interventi che verranno applicati alle facciate unilaterali dell'edificio sono nuove estensioni leggere, balconi vetrati e finestre attrezzate sporgenti attrezzate. Il lavoro sarà sul prospetto nord, est e sud, poiché il prospetto ovest è intersecato con un altro edificio nel complesso. Questa ricerca spiegherà i problemi esistenti delle facciate, i nuovi trattamenti che possono essere applicati, l'uso di ciascun trattamento e il motivo di tale uso sulla base di progetti simili.
