Large eddy simulation of salt finger convection regime.

The focus of this thesis is to study the phenomenon of the salt fingers in double diffusive convection flow, with a particular focus on the transition from quasi-Rayleigh-Bénard convection to the salt finger regime. The flow is considered in Boussinesq approximation. A various number of numerical simulation, using the Large Eddy Simulation technique for turbulent flows, has been performed with different parameters. The results are then been analysed and compared with previous work.

L'obbiettivo di questa tesi è di studiare il fenomeno dei salt finger nella convezione doppiamente diffusiva, con una particolare attenzione alla transizione da una convezione di tipo quasi-Rayleigh-Bénard ad un regime di salt finger. Il flusso è considerato in approssimazione di Boussinesq. Diverse simulazioni numeriche sono state fatte, utilizzando la tecnica di tipo LES per flussi turbolenti, con differenti parametri. I risultati sono stati analizzati e comparati con lavori precedenti.
