Rising Dandora : waste regeneration project

The thesis proposes a project for the management of the waste problem and studies its feasibility. The project is located in Nairobi, Kenya, in the open landfill of Dandora, the main landfill in the city. This landfill came into contact with neighboring neighborhoods causing social and environmental problems. So the aim is to redevelop the landfill and make it a public green area, but at the same time it houses a plant that recovers recyclable materials from waste and transforms non-recyclable waste into electricity. In addition to the waste solution, the project proposes an urban design that offers public space both as green and as paved areas, making various activities possible. While the focus of the project is the six towers erected in the heart of the redeveloped park, the quaili represent the landmark. Through these themes the project questions the relationship between the various elements and the relationship with the rest of the city.

La tesi propone un progetto per la gestione del problema di rifiuti e ne studia la fattibilità. Il progetto è localizzato a Nairobi, Kenya, nella discarica aperta di Dandora, la principale discarica della città. Questa discarica si travo a contatto con i quartiere vicini causando problemi sociali e ambientali. Quindi lo scopo è riqualificare la discarica e renderlo un area verde pubblica ma alle stesso tempo ospita un plant che recupera dai rifiuti i materiali riciclabili e trasformare in energia elettrica i rifiuti non riciclabili. Oltre alla soluzione dei rifiuti il progetto propone un disegno urbano che offre dello spazio pubblico sia in qualità di verde sia in qualità di are pavimentate, rendendo possibile varie attività. Mentre il focus del progetto sono le sei torri erette nel cuore del parco riqualificato, i quaili rappresentano il landmark. Attraverso questi temi il progetto interroga sul rapporto tra i vari elementi e sul rapporto con il resto della città.
