Architecture : a container of meanings. Experience as a bond between human and built environment

People see architecture, they don’t feel it, they only partially experience it in a superficial and quick way, not for a lack of interest but as direct result of a society that values appearance and speed. Nowadays the more a building is bizarre, the more is considered attractive, fact that confirms the fact that in front of architecture we stop at the sense of the sight. This elaborate illustrates what experience is and how perceiving architecture involves the senses of touch, hearing, smell, and sight, even if we agree that this latter is the most immediate. All these components of perception create together an emotion, biologically meant as somatic, electric and chemical events that can be identified analysing our body, translation of a more complete experience of the built environment. The emotion leads then to an awareness of what we deeply feel and why we feel it, that introduces the issue of the bond between human and place, calling into question the identity of a place, that is threatened by the construction of clone buildings, for the unique sake of saving time and money, to the detriment of diversity and uniqueness. Architecture becomes for us a container of meanings, while the sensitive and emotional experience the tools to understand the bond between human and built environment, of which he is the artificer and the inhabitant.

La maggior parte delle persone l’architettura la vede senza sentirla, ne fa un’esperienza parziale e veloce, non per mancanza di interesse ma come diretto risultato della società della velocità e della superficialità. Oggi più un edificio è appariscente e strano più è attraente, fatto che conferma che di fronte all’architettura ci si ferma alla vista di essa. Nella nostra tesi illustriamo come l’architettura sia percepita attraverso tutti i sensi, tatto, udito, olfatto e vista, condividendo comunque il fatto che quest’ultima sia il modo più immediato per percepirla. Tutti questi componenti della percezione portano alla creazione di un’emozione, biologicamente intesa come evento somatico, elettrico e chimico che può essere identificato analizzando il nostro corpo, e considerata la traduzione di un’esperienza più completa dell’ambiente costruito. L’emozione porta quindi a una consapevolezza di ciò che sentiamo e del perché lo sentiamo, che introduce la questione del legame fra uomo e luogo, affrontando l’identità dei luoghi, che è minacciata dalla costruzione di edifici-clone, che permette il risparmio di tempo e denaro, a discapito della diversità e dell’unicità. L’architettura diventa per noi un contenitore di significati e l’esperienza sensibile ed emozionale uno strumento per comprendere il legame che unisce l’uomo all’ambiente costruito di cui è artefice e abitante.
