Military museum : transforming the old fortress of Capo D'Orso

The following thesis of Laurea Magistrale proposes a design for the re-purposing of the existing fortress structure situated in Capo D’Orso-Palau, Sardegna. The subject of the thesis is taken from an old competition of Young Architects Competitions, which is a foundation that arranges architectural competitions since 2015. This particular competition about transforming the military fortress of Capo D’Orso was held back in 2018. Because of its crucial location through the history from the beginning of the 19th century until to the Second World War the fortress witnessed to the naval battles in the Mediterranean Sea but during the Second World War Palau was also damaged from the bombing attacks so the site become ruinated and abandoned eventually. The design proposal consists of transforming the old military fortress into a museum in order to become a milieu for exhibiting the naval history of the place. The design approach was to attach a new volume to the existing half-buried structure in order to accommodate some functions of the new museum. Trough out the process materiality, scale, relationship between the ancient & contemporary plus blending into the natural environment became the important features of the project. The intention was to stay subtle in the landscape and most importantly was to create a space where you can perceive the dialogue between the old and the new. The project reflects a fusion between the old structure and the new additional volume.

La seguente tesi di Laurea Magistrale propone un progetto per la riqualificazione della fortezza esistente situata a Capo d'Orso-Palau, in Sardegna. La base di partenza della tesi è un vecchio concorso di Young Architects Competitions, una fondazione che organizza concorsi di architettura dal 2015, tenutasi nel 2018. Grazie alla sua posizione cruciale attraverso la storia dall'inizio del XIX secolo fino alla seconda guerra mondiale, la fortezza fu testimone delle battaglie navali nel Mar Mediterraneo; durante la seconda guerra mondiale Palau fu danneggiata dagli attacchi dei bombardamenti, che danneggiarono il sito, che fu conseguentemente abbandonato. La proposta progettuale consiste nel trasformare la vecchia fortezza militare in un museo che ospiti un’esposizione sulla storia navale del luogo. L'approccio progettuale è stato quello di aggiungere un nuovo volume alla struttura semi-sepolta esistente al fine di ospitare alcune funzioni del nuovo museo. Elementi caratterizzanti del progetto sono la materialità del processo, la scala, il rapporto tra antico e contemporaneo e l’integrazione con l’ambiente naturale circostante. L'approccio progettauale prevedeva di essere discreti nel paesaggio e, soprattutto, di creare uno spazio in cui sia possibile percepire il dialogo tra il vecchio e il nuovo. Il progetto riflette una fusione tra la vecchia struttura e il nuovo volume aggiuntivo.
