Arches in tunnel. A new connection to Mantova’s Ducal Palace

As the important historical building of Mantova, the Ducal Palace has been integrated into the city over time and has become an important node in the city, and known as "City in the city". In the ancient time, the Ducal Palace was a palace and a fortress, with inward development features, while the façade facing the lake was closed. Vòlto Osculo is an ancient passage between the Santa Barbara Corridor and the Santa Barbara Cathedral, the important gateway connect the Sant Giorgio Bridge and Santa Barbara Square. Today, the function of the palace has been changed, from palace and residence to the museum and public spaces. Therefore, the project aims to reopen and re-use the ancient passage of the Ducal Palace “Vòlto Oscuro”, with the main purpose of creating alternative public space, to re-establish the connection between the Ducal Palace and the lake, including the Sant Giorgio Bridge , in order to promoting the area integrated into the city and surrounding landscapes. At the same time, visitors are provided with a new access to the Ducal Palace, and making it easier for the public to perceive the connection between the spatial structure of the Ducal Palace and the urban fabric of Mantova.

Come importante edificio storico di Mantova, il Palazzo Ducale è stato integrato nella città nel tempo ed è diventato un nodo importante della città, noto come "Città in città".
