The objective of this thesis work is to provide a measurement instrument that can objectively characterize the results obtained from medical treatments prescribed to patients suffering from cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis. The goal, therefore, is to be able to classify and analyze the mucus, of the sick subjects, in relation to its viscosity, in order to have parameters that are indicative both of the status of the disease and of the effect of the different cures assigned. In order to fulfil the purpose, a careful analysis of the diseases of interest and of the mucus in its physical characteristics has been developed, as well as a study on the rheology and on the methods used to measure the viscosity of the various substances. This was necessary in order to provide the basic knowledge for developing the instrument. The MUCUSMETER is based on a Cone and Plate geometry set in motion by a brushless motor, whose operation will be analyzed. An ESCON 50/4 from Maxon was used for the motor control and an Arduino UNO board was used for the digital interface. In order to carry out the studied measurements a code was written in Arduino IDE, able to manage the data taken from the motor controller to calculate the desired quantities using the appropriate mathematical equations; moreover, using the Processing program it was possible to save data and to create a simple user interface. During the design phase some mechanical parts have been created or adapted to allow the correct use of the MUCUSMETER. At the end of the work some samples of standard fluids of which the viscosity values are known were analyzed, to verify the efficiency of the instrument.
