Public spaces for multi-cultural communities. The case study of Piazzale Loreto. Milan, Italy

“Can landscape architecture help in bringing multi-ethnic and inter-cultural communities together?” This was the motivation to start the thesis, with an attempt to find a design strategy that would help to bring people from different backgrounds together. To answer this question, the project started from studying public spaces as they are the mirror of how a community is functioning together and whether if the community is well integrated. Reading through studies written by urban designers such as Jan Gehl, I discovered that the key lead to creating a successful public space is to start from the people. The people who are living near that space or going to live there will guide the designers through defining the ‘needed’ functions to be provided and the general atmosphere of the design. The site area is Piazzale Loreto, in the city of Milan Italy. It is a busy junction point, critical for the city in terms of connectivity, graved in the minds of the Milanese people for historical unfortunate events, but most importantly it is the center of multiple neighborhoods and the heart of an ambitious community that likes to be called by the name of NOLO ‘North of Loreto”. This paper tells the story of a thriving group of people who try through endless attempts to help bring each-other together despite their different backgrounds and the current mediocre situation of the area. The more one reads and knows about them, the more he is encouraged to try to fulfill their need for a better and uniting public space. The design proposal started from looking at the piazza through two different lenses, one as a physical space that needs to be regenerated and developed, and the second as an intangible space that has the potential to incorporate diversity as its core value. And it ended with a proposal of a three-leveled public square that functions as one system. To conclude, a successful design starts from the people and the goal should be fulfilling their needs, as this is what the role of an architect is all about, to serve the people.

"L'architettura del paesaggio può aiutare a riunire comunità multietniche e interculturali?" Questa è stata la motivazione per iniziare la tesi, nel tentativo di trovare una strategia di progettazione che aiuterebbe a riunire persone di diversa estrazione. Per rispondere a questa domanda, il progetto è iniziato dallo studio degli spazi pubblici poiché sono lo specchio di come una comunità funziona insieme e se la comunità è ben integrata. Leggendo gli studi scritti da designer urbani come Jan Gehl, ho scoperto che la chiave per creare uno spazio pubblico di successo è partire dalle persone. Le persone che vivono vicino a quello spazio o che vivranno lì guideranno i progettisti nel definire le funzioni "necessarie" da fornire e l'atmosfera generale del design. L'area del sito è Piazzale Loreto, nella città di Milano, Italia. È un punto di congiunzione occupato, fondamentale per la città in termini di connettività, intrappolato nelle menti dei milanesi per eventi sfortunati storici, ma soprattutto è il centro di più quartieri e il cuore di una comunità ambiziosa a cui piace essere chiamato con il nome di NOLO 'Nord di Loreto ”. Questo articolo racconta la storia di un fiorente gruppo di persone che tenta infiniti tentativi di aiutarsi a vicenda nonostante i loro diversi background e l'attuale situazione mediocre della zona. Più si legge e si conosce su di loro, più viene incoraggiato a cercare di soddisfare il loro bisogno di uno spazio pubblico migliore e unitario. La proposta progettuale è iniziata osservando la piazza attraverso due obiettivi diversi, uno come spazio fisico che deve essere rigenerato e sviluppato, e il secondo come spazio immateriale che ha il potenziale per incorporare la diversità come valore fondamentale. E si è conclusa con una proposta di una piazza pubblica a tre livelli che funziona come un unico sistema. Per concludere, un design di successo parte dalle persone e l'obiettivo dovrebbe essere soddisfare le loro esigenze, poiché questo è il ruolo di un architetto nel servire le persone.
