This paper delves into the process of the transition of Architecture in Greece from the Vernacular to the Modern in the period between the 1920’s-70’s. The first section of the paper analyses the vernacular architecture of the country, its different forms, as well as its clash with different styles, to the point of its replacement by the modern movement and any valuable characteristics that were eliminated through this process. The second section analyses the situation of Greece in the 20th century, the method and conditions that led to the adoption of the modern movement, coupled with a look at some of the most important architects of the time (Pikionis, Kostantinidis, Karantinos, Balsamakis) and their work and ideology. The third and final stage of the research focuses on Crete, an island with a very versatile Architectural background and investigates the reasons and process that created modernised vernacular buildings and the emerging trend for “antiquating” modern buildings.
