Meditations on architecture. Ontology and immanence

Throughout time the architectural discipline has been tightly linked to the concept of representation and as it may seem, it always served as a frame of allusion. This thesis sets voyage on an expedition towards exploring the realm of a transcendent architecture, that surpasses the boundaries of representation and expands beyond its traditional horizons, and as such hopes of introducing architecture not as a representation of thought, but, as a possibility of thought. The thesis deals with two topics regarding architecture: its ontology and immanence. First, the thesis explores architecture’s ontology, embodiment and existence through the lens of the Finnish architect Juhanni Pallasmaa. And second, architecture’s immanence by trying to dissect and explain it through the philosophical works of the French post-modernist philosophers: Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Jacques Derrida, and how they find relevance to the works and critical thoughts of famed American architect: Peter Eisenman. The image the thesis seeks to provide is that of a plot that opens a path to the deep structure of thought rooted in the soil of architecture, reflecting not only on the being of this discipline, but also on its possible becoming.

La disciplina architettonica è da sempre legata al concetto di rappresentazione, non solo da un punto di vista progettuale. Si può infatti considerare l’architettura come una rappresentazione di idee, di significati e, in modo più ampio, un’espressione del nostro tempo e della nostra società. Questa tesi mira ad indagare i presupposti teorici e concettuali dell’architettura, provando a delineare gli aspetti più trascendentali del progettare architettonico, ossia quegli elementi che sempre soggiacciono al prodotto finale e sui quali poche volte la riflessione si sofferma. In sintesi, questo lavoro mira a definire l'architettura non come una mera rappresentazione del pensiero, ma più radicalmente come una possibilità di pensiero. La tesi affronta principalmente due aspetti concettuali dell’architettura: la sua ontologia e l'immanenza. Inizialmente, la tesi esplora i temi ontologici dell’architettura, cercando di metterne in luce gli aspetti esperienziali, attraverso la prospettiva dell'architetto finlandese Juhanni Pallasmaa. In seguito, si affronta l’idea di immanenza, in relazione alle opere di alcuni filosofi postmodernisti francesi: Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari e Jacques Derrida; quest’ultimo in dialogo con le opere e il pensiero critico del famoso architetto americano Peter Eisenman. L’immagine che si vuole dare è quella di una trama che apre una strada verso la struttura profonda del pensiero radicata nel suolo dell'architettura, riflettendo non solo sull’essere di questa disciplina ma anche sul suo possibile divenire.
