La Rocca. A reinterpretation of cultural heritage based on contemporary shifts

La Rocca is a multidisciplinary project aiming to explore architecture in a respectful continuous dialogue between the past, the present and the future. An understanding of the threshold between the historic and the new has always been in question in our contemporary built environment where users’ needs shift continuously and grow constantly, changing the perception of the existent. Attempting to understand this ongoing discussion, the project is situated in a context where the challenge of reinterpreting built heritage is crucial for the survival of the identity of a town in Tuscany. Set in a small town in Tuscany, Ripafratta possesses its own cultural and historical background that faded away with the centuries. Its identity is carried by its most significant landmark, Il Castello di Ripafratta. Being the main yet the most marginalized legacy of the town, the castles’ alteration to a ruin put in danger the identity of the town. A possibility of reviving the debris and passing them on to future generations is considered where the host, the castle and its towers, will embrace new functions adequate to the current demands. The Castle complex as a self-sufficient architectural defensive masterpiece is reintroduced to the mass as a social hub, hosting diverse activities, mostly related to climbing and hiking activities. In order to approach the site challenges, La Rocca develops a vision where a harmonious coexistence between the different cultures is met. The team adopted an approach in which the urban, architectural and detailed levels were developed simultaneously, achieving comprehensive results. Due to the spread character of the site, the project is conceived in parts according to the elements forming the complex - the Castle itself, Niccolai Tower and Centino Tower. Integrated and merged into its surrounding and landscape, La Rocca displays fragmented yet associated volumes creating a journey, expanding from the center of Ripafratta till Centino tower, where an interchange between the old and new is spontaneous. Along those lines, volumes adopt distinctive approaches according to their relation to the existent and to their locations’ historical significance. The last is promoted through a functional arrangement that highlights it, that respects the value of the heritage and that associates it to the new ones. Integration is further tackled through reinstalling and readapting the network between the existing and introduced elements. Subsequently, the project is taken to a realistic level where detailing plays a major role in understanding the integrity between the chosen technologies. The architectural design is additionally supported with detailed structural verifications, optimized energy simulations and building services, reaching an optimum building performance adequate for the user demands. All investigations, drawings, calculations and diagrammatic schemes are included within the body of the book together with some visualizations helping to imagine the project upon completion.

La Rocca è un progetto multidisciplinare che si pone l’obiettivo di esplorare l’architettura attraverso un continuo e rispettoso dialogo tra passato, presente e futuro. Il riconoscimento dei punti di contatto tra nuovo e antico ha sempre rappresentato un punto di discussione del ambiente costruito contemporaneo in cui i bisogni degli utenti cambiano continuamente e crescono costantemente, cambiando la percezione dell’esistente. Tentando di comprendere questo precesso in divenire, il progetto è ambientato in un contesto in cui la reinterpretazione del patrimonio edilizio diventa una sfida cruciale per la sopravvivenza dell’identità della città Toscana, sede dell’intervento.. Situato nella città Toscana di San Giuliano Terme, il borgo di Ripafratta ha visto affievolirsi, nel corso dei secoli, il suo background storico -culturale . L’identità del borgo oggi è mantenuta viva dal suo punto di riferimento più significativo, il Castello di Ripafratta. Il Castello, pur essendo la principale eredità storica, risulta anche la più emarginata della città. L’abbandono del castello sta mettendo in grave pericolo l’identità del borgo. L’intenzione è quella di ridar vita al passato e trasmetterlo alle generazioni future, affidando al castello e alle sue torri funzioni adeguate alle esigenze attuali. Il complesso del castello, capolavoro difensivo e architettonico, viene trasformato in un centro con funzioni sociali e ricreative e che ospita diverse integra al suo interno diverse funzioni legate alle attività sportive, quali arrampicata ed escursionismo, con altre culturali quali concerti e spettacoli. Con l’intenzione di affrontare le sfide specifiche del luogo, La Rocca ospita un’armoniosa convivenza tra le diverse culture. L’approccio adottato si pone l’obiettivo di sviluppare il progetto sia nei suoi aspetti urbani che architettonici e di dettagliato, cosí da ottenenere risultati a livello globale. A causa della grandezza del sito, il progetto è sviluppato in diverse parti, suddiviso in base agli elementi che compongono il complesso edilizio: il Castello, la Torre Niccolai e la Torre Centino. Integrata nel paesaggio, La Rocca mostra volumi frammentati ma in relazione tra loro che creano un percorso che, espandendosi dal centro di Ripafratta fino alla torre di Centino, crea un ambiente in cui il passaggio tra nuovo e antico risulta spontaneo. In tal senso, i volumi adottano caratteristiche distintive in base alla loro relazione con l’esistente e al significato storico della loro posizione. Tale posizione è valorizzata grazie ad una disposizione funzionale che oltre ad evidenziare e rispettare il valore del patrimonio storico, lo collega al nuovo. L’integrazione tra nuovo e antico viene ulteriormente affrontata ribadendo e riadattando le connesioni tra gli elementi esistenti e quelli nuovi. Infine, il progetto viene affrontato a livello ingegneristico, in cui i dettagli svolgono un ruolo importante nella comprensione dell’integrità tra le tecnologie scelte. La progettazione architettonica è inoltre supportata da verifiche strutturali dettagliate, simulazioni energetiche ottimizzate e progettazione degli impianti, raggiungendo prestazioni ottimali dell’edificio, adeguate alle esigenze dell’utente. Tutte le indagini, i disegni, i calcoli e gli schemi schematici sono riportati nel book, commentati e schematizzati cosí da permettere di comprendere il progetto nel suo complesso.
