Plastic arts centre. Progetto per un centro polivalente per le arti a Leuven

Based on an actual competiton, the PAC’s project wants to regenerate an area inside the historical city centre of Leuven (Belgium) realizing a performing art centre. The main topics of the competition notice are the sustainability and the historical heritage of the city: the objective is to convert a dismissed hospital area into a new district that can create a dialogue with the surrounding neighborhood but also bring the Dijle back to the surface, because it’s curently an underground canal. The name of the project is Plastic Arts Centre. It not only underlines the use of recycled plastic materials but also the purpose of the building: a center for plastic arts. The indoors of the building will be used as much as a museum, than a multi-functional theatre and a dancing-musical school. After an accurate analysis of the context, the masterplan’s design also wants to integrate the area inside the urban road network, creating a new park inside the city centre to promote the Dijle canal and a smooth mobility. The architectural project creates a dialogue with the existing architectural heritage in terms of volumes and external materials, meanwhile the interior shows the innovating side of the project: a pultruded-profiles structure with recyled plastic bricks. As requested by the competition notice, a particular attention has been addressed to the user’s comfort: the interior design tries to reach a high level of acoustic in the theatre only working with recycled materials, in particular PET bricks. Regarding the thermal comfort point of view and focusing on the sustainability, the project has analysed the performance of the building (lighting and energy) in order to define the best technological solution, also taking the location into consideration adn trying to reduce the energy consumption.

Ispirato ad un bando di concorso, il progetto PAC ha l’obiettivo di riqualificare un’area nel centro storico di Leuven, in Belgio, attraverso la realizzazione di un centro culturale per le arti performative. I temi principali del bando sono la sostenibilità ed il patrimonio storico della città: si vuole convertire un’ex-area ospedaliera dismessa realizzando un nuovo quartiere che dialoghi con il fronte stradale esistente e che riporti alla luce il canale Dijle, ora sotterraneo. Da qui il nome del progetto: Plastic Arts Centre, che sottolinea l’utilizzo di materiali plastici riciclati ma allo stesso modo riprende la sua destinazione d’uso, un centro per le arti plastiche. Le funzioni principali previste sono delle sale espositive, una sala teatrale polivalente ed una scuola di danza e musica. Dopo un’attenta analisi del contesto, il disegno del masterplan vuole integrare l’area all’interno della viabilità urbana creando un nuovo parco nel centro città che valorizzi il canale Dijle e promuova la mobilità dolce. Il progetto architettonico crea un dialogo con il patrimonio storico esistente in termini di volumi e materiali esterni, mentre all’interno mostra il lato innovativo di una struttura in profili compositi e tamponamenti in materiale plastico riciclato. Come richiesto dal bando, un’attenzione particolare è stata rivolta al comfort degli utenti: si è cercato di ottenere una buona acustica del teatro lavorando materiali riciclati, in particolare mattoni in polietilene tereftalato (PET). Da un punto di vista del comfort ambientale e sempre nella logica della sostenibilità, il progetto si è soffermato sull’analisi delle performance illuminotecniche ed energetiche dell’edificio per definire le soluzioni tecnologiche da adottare, considerando la sua localizzazione e nell’ottica di minimizzare i dispendi di energia.
