Blockchain in supply chain management : a cross-sectoral analysis

Nowadays, Blockchain represents one of the most discussed topics in business contexts. A survey provided by the World Economic Forum asserts that around 10% of the global GDP will be stored in Blockchain by the next eight years. Recently, such technology has spread to a huge variety of sectors, from finance and insurance to health care and utilities. One of the objectives of this thesis is to investigate how the Blockchain technology is impacting the supply chain context, unveiling the main needs and problems addressed by such technology. Furthermore, it has been investigated how the physical product moved along the supply chain is linked to its “digital twin” in the Blockchain. The objectives of this thesis have been carried out by depicting the current situation of Blockchain-enabled solutions for the supply chain, and by highlighting the differences among the most relevant industries.

Al giorno d'oggi, la Blockchain rappresenta uno degli argomenti più discussi nei contesti di business. Un'indagine fornita dal World Economic Forum afferma che circa il 10% del PIL globale sarà immagazzinato in Blockchain entro i prossimi otto anni. Recentemente, tale tecnologia si è diffusa in una grande varietà di settori, dalla finanza e le assicurazioni, alla sanità e ai servizi pubblici. Uno degli obiettivi di questa tesi è quello di indagare come la tecnologia Blockchain sta influenzando il contesto della supply chain, svelando i principali bisogni e problemi affrontati da tale tecnologia. Inoltre, è stato indagato il modo in cui il prodotto fisico che viene gestito lungo la filiera logistico-produttiva è legato al suo “gemello digitale” nella Blockchain. Gli obiettivi di questa tesi sono stati realizzati illustrando la situazione attuale delle piattaforme Blockchain per la supply chain, ed evidenziando le differenze tra le industrie più rilevanti.
