Complexity and dynamism are considered as intrinsic features in those companies that perform – at least a part of – engineering and production activities after the customer order arrival. As a matter of facts, engineer-to-order (ETO) companies are facing variability and uncertainty, affecting their capability of efficiently and effectively design, manufacture and deliver a customized product by respecting the customer due date. In this scenario, planning and coordinating the activities of the order management process is particularly challenging, entailing the need of specifically tailored planning tools and managerial approaches. However, few frameworks are available in literature for the ETO context, so that companies usually have to adapt planning models and information & communication technologies conceived for other sectors. In this regard, the objective of the thesis is to develop and evaluate a planning and control framework for the order management process in companies operating in ETO context. In particular, focus of the thesis is held on project-based machinery-building companies. The framework encompasses a representation of the theoretical flow of the activities that are deemed as appropriate and relevant in the light of the order fulfillment. Hence, each activity is matched with the corresponding resources and IT tools that have been considered as theoretically required. Subsequently, after presenting the framework under a theoretical point of view, an assessment is carried out in Italian companies operating in project-based machinery-building context, in order to evaluate the practical suitability, by analyzing similarities and differences.

Abstract
Subsequently, after presenting the framework under a theoretical point of view, an assessment is carried out in Italian companies operating in project-based machinery-building context, in order to evaluate the practical suitability, by analyzing similarities and differences.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
