Classification of social impact definitions

The concept of social impact lacks of a precise definition. The purpose of the research is to collect the most emerging definitions from literature, classify them and align the different points of view, considering the lack of a common language around the concept. The work is organized in three sections. The first one presents the aim of the research and, to justify the importance of the analysis, the most important steps representing the increasing interest in the social dimension are described. Then, hypotheses about the presence of common dimensions (intentionality, measurability and additionality) among definitions of social impact are made. The second section explains the steps and the criteria used for the selection of the most appropriate authors’ contributions, realized through Scopus and the use of specific keywords. Last section is dedicated to the narrative literature review, which aims to describe and categorize through specific criteria the emerging definitions of social impact, and analyze if the hypotheses made in the previous sections are confirmed. The analyzed authors confirm the lack of a common language and the most suitable criterion to classify the definitions is the sector/context of origin. The three dimensions emerge and new ones can be extrapolated, like the long term perspective, the contextual nature of social impact and the presence of a community of people.

Il concetto di impatto sociale è ancora difficile da definire con precisione. L’obiettivo della ricerca è di raccogliere le definizioni emergenti dalla letteratura e classificarle, in modo da allineare i diversi punti di vista, considerata la mancanza di un linguaggio comune attorno al concetto. Il lavoro è organizzato in tre sezioni. La prima presenta l’obiettivo e, per giustificare l’importanza della ricerca, vengono descritti gli eventi più importanti del crescente interesse verso la dimensione sociale. Vengono inoltre formulate ipotesi sulla presenza di dimensioni comuni tra le definizioni: intenzionalità, misurabilità e addizionalità. La seconda parte spiega i passi e i criteri utilizzati per selezionare i documenti più appropriati per la definizione del concetto, attraverso Scopus e l’utilizzo di parole chiave. La terza sezione descrive le definizioni emergenti, le classifica secondo specifici criteri e verifica se le ipotesi fatte in precedenza vengono confermate. Gli autori analizzati confermano la mancanza di un linguaggio comune e il criterio migliore per classificare le definizioni è il contesto/settore di provenienza. Le tre dimensioni emergono e nuove vengono rilevate, come la prospettiva di lungo termine, la contestualità dell’impatto sociale e la presenza costante di una comunità di persone.
