Territorial weaving. A system of social stripes. Chiusa S. Michele, Susa Valley

The Susa Valley is geographically located in a meaningful and central position, that has provided the main secular connection between Italy and France. This role, in addiction to its morphology and topography, has forged the main traits of this territory, which is deeply marked by continuous linear elements that continue along the whole valley, characterizing its landscape: infrastructures. These artificial features, together with the natural one (the Dora Riparia river), pass sinuously through the territory, creating a series of spaces in-between, that are considered as a recurring character of the territory. Their geographical position, together with their lack of identity, lead to the definition of residual spaces that, together with the sprawled built settlements, agricultural fields and the lack of harmony between them, produce a strong territorial fragmentation. This problematic situation, that is frequent along the Susa Valley, is the starting point of the thesis work. The will is to provide an operating method, focusing on a specific area in which all these topics are exploited. The new architecture and landscape design aims to introduce a different order, a hierarchy inside the overall system. The design process starts from the territory and transforms it, highlighting its foundations and principles, creating a new public space that at the end converges into the pre-existing territory, enriching it. The infrastructures, inside this new territorial system, gain a greater importance, becoming relevant spatial characters that define the public ground. In fact, their physical presences are now exploited, leading to the creation of meaningful and complex public spaces. Socially, the new public system works also as an aggregation pole along the valley gathering people that were dispersed before.

La Val di Susa è geograficamente situata in una posizione significativa, rappresentando nei secoli il principale collegamento tra Italia e Francia. Questo ruolo, unitamente alla sua morfologia e topografia, ha plasmato i principali tratti del territorio, il quale è profondamente segnato da elementi lineari continui che si sviluppano lungo tutta la valle, caratterizzandone il paesaggio: le infrastrutture. Queste tracce antropiche, insieme a quella naturale (il fiume Dora Riparia), attraversano sinuosamente il territorio, creando una serie di spazi di risulta, considerati ricorrenti nel territorio. La loro posizione geografica e la loro mancanza di identità porta alla definizione di spazi “residuali” che, insieme agli insediamenti edilizi diffusi e ai terreni agricoli, producono una forte frammentazione territoriale, dovuta alla disarmonia reciproca dei vari elementi. Questa criticità territoriale, frequente lungo tutta la Val di Susa, è il punto di partenza del lavoro di tesi. L’obiettivo è quello di fornire un metodo operativo, focalizzandosi su un'area specifica in cui vengono individuate tutte le problematiche. La nuova architettura e il disegno del paesaggio hanno l'obiettivo di introdurre un’armonia, una gerarchia all'interno del sistema generale. Il processo di progettazione parte dal territorio e lo trasforma, evidenziandone fondamenti e principi, creando un nuovo spazio pubblico che alla fine converge nel territorio preesistente, arricchendolo. Le infrastrutture, all'interno di questo nuovo sistema territoriale, acquisiscono maggiore importanza, diventando elementi rilevanti che definiscono uno spazio pubblico significativo e complesso. Sul piano sociale, il nuovo sistema pubblico funziona anche come polo di aggregazione lungo la valle creando una maggiore coesione tra le comunità locali.
