Dis+connection. Widespread thermae

The project is situated in the valley of Susa, precisely at La Riposa (2079 m a.s.l.), halfway between Susa (503 m) and Rocciamelone’s peak (3538 m). In a valley known as a crossroad between Italy and France and consequently shaped by faster and faster connection system, our aim was to design an environment where the time stands still. Thanks to the high-speed railway infrastructure that will turn the area into an important international junction, remoted places were reclaimed to research different types of disconnection. Then we asked ourselves: why so fast? We felt, in our more and more individualistic and interconnected life, the need to switch off even if just for a short time. Thermal baths seemed to us an intriguing topic because of their double nature. On the one hand they represent, since ancient times, a place of re-vitalization, sharing and connection between people. On the other hand they embody very unique sensations related to the individual. Starting from the Roman thermae, passing through the oriental steam baths and leading to the most modern Finnish saunas, we believe these places are still today very interesting to be investigated. Different environments where each “organ” presents its own peculiarity and works independently but if within a system they create something more, something living as a human body. This is where the idea of widespread thermae came from. After clarifying the nature of our project, we investigated the territory. We found the presence of many military fortresses, nowadays abandoned, spread in the entire Susa Valley. We were impressed by the way these ruins relate with the surroundings, dominating high peaks and extreme situations. We have tried to design an organism that through a disguised approach could fit into the territory but also open to the landscape. We worked on the idea of openness and inclusivity but at the same time we tried to understand the site and its peculiarity. The choice of the site was led by the desire of research of nature that it is immediately connected to the feeling of well-being and freedom. Furthermore the site is still today an important rendezvous for tourists and mountaineers because of its easy accessibility despite the altitude. Starting from this approach we developed a continuous dialogue between the environment and the mountain itself, between what we see and what we can use as matter of composition. Three elements became essentials in the organization of our proposal: water, ground and view. The final result appears as the co-existence of these three elements.

l progetto “DIS+CONNECTION. Widespread Thermae” è situato in Val di Susa, precisamente a La Riposa (2079 m s.l.m), a metà strada tra Susa (503 m) e la cima del monte Rocciamelone (3538 m). In una valle conosciuta come crocevia tra Italia e Francia e di conseguenza segnata da un sistema di connessioni sempre più veloci, il nostro intento è stato quello di creare un luogo dove il tempo si possa fermare. Grazie alla linea dell’alta velocità che trasformerà l’area in un importante snodo internazionale, siamo andati alla ricerca di luoghi remoti dove investigare diversi tipi di disconnessione. A quel punto ci siamo chiesti: perché così veloci? Riteniamo, in questa sempre più individualista ed interconnessa esistenza, il bisogno di “staccarci” anche se solo per un breve periodo di tempo. Le terme ci sono sembrate da subito un interessante tema proprio per la loro doppia natura. Da una parte rappresentano sin dall’antichità un luogo di rivitalizzazione, condivisione e connessione tra le persone. Dall’altra parte si fanno portavoce di sensazioni uniche e strettamente legate ai sensi del singolo. A partire dalle terme romane, passando dai bagni turchi orientali e arrivando alle più moderne saune finlandesi, crediamo che le terme siano ancora oggi un tema molto interessante da investigare. Diversi ambienti dove ogni “organo” presenta le sue singolarità e lavora indipendentemente ma che solo all’interno di un sistema può generare qualcosa di più, qualcosa di vivo come un corpo umano. Da qui è nata l’idea di un sistema di terme diffuso. Dopo aver definito la natura del progetto abbiamo investigato il territorio. Abbiamo scoperto numerose fortezze militari, oggigiorno abbandonate, distribuite sull’intera valle. Siamo rimasti impressionati dal modo in cui queste rovine si relazionano con il territorio circostante, molto spesso situate su altezze considerevoli e in situazioni estreme. Abbiamo quindi provato a creare un organismo che attraverso lo stesso approccio mimetico potesse inserirsi nel terreno ma allo stesso tempo aprirsi verso il paesaggio. Abbiamo lavorato sull’idea di apertura ed inclusività ma allo stesso tempo cercando di capire le peculiarità e caratteristiche del sito di progetto. La scelta del sito è stata guidata dal desiderio di natura che immediatamente si connette ad una sensazione di benessere e libertà. Inoltre il sito è ancora oggi un importante punto di ritrovo per turisti ed alpinisti per via della sua facile accessibilità nonostante l’altitudine. Da questo approccio abbiamo sviluppato un continuo dialogo tra il paesaggio circostante e la montagna stessa, tra quello che si può ammirare e quello con cui si può dialogare. Tre elementi sono risultati essenziali nell’organizzazione della nostra proposta: l’acqua, la terra ed il panorama. Il risultato finale appare come la ricerca della co-esistenza di questi tre elementi.
