Ivrea. A utopian ruin

With the successful listing of Ivrea as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This thesis calls into question whether the simple update of program within the listed buildings is enough. Ivrea first appeared in 100 BC as a roman outpost and has since witnessed centuries of history. Although its ancient past is still very important to the town’s heritage, it was only after the 1930’s that Ivrea gained its identity on the global stage. During that time, there was a clear drive towards utopia within the modernist movement and is reflected quite evidently in the ideologies of Adriano Olivetti; a man who inherited a typewriter company and created a near utopian community within Ivrea. However, as with most towns of that time built around a single industry, the inevitable failure of the company ended the thriving community and with it, shattered the utopian dream. Today, Ivrea exists as a utopian ruin of the twentieth century, representing the impossible utopia and the consequences for those who attempt to reach it. With its society growing ever-older, it marks the end of an important chapter for the town of Ivrea. And it is with this ending that we propose to preserve the memory of the utopian endeavour by flooding the Olivetti site. Turning disaster into saviour, the flood will come as a welcome stream of vitality, allowing the element of water to generate a Fata Morgana of the once utopian landscape. With their tops still visible above the water, the iconic heritage buildings will now exist as an archipelago of monuments within the lake, isolated and protected from any outside influence.

In seguito all´inclusione di Ivrea nella lista dei siti UNESCO, il lavoro di tesi qui presentato si pone come obbiettivo la discussione del programma funzionale degli edifici di interesse storico culturale presenti nella zona. La fondazione di Ivrea per mano romana risale al I secolo avanti Cristo. Nonostante l´antica origine, la storia della cittá assume importanza globale solo dopo gli anni 30 del ´900 quando l´architettura del movimento moderno si sposa all´ideologia di Adriano Olivetti e da vita ad una comunitá utopica. Olivetti diventa sinonimo di Ivrea e con il fallimento della ditta, anche la visione di sviluppo della cittá inevitabilmente giunge a termine. Oggi, Ivrea reappresenta ció che rimane dell´ideologia novecentesca, memoria dell´impossibilitá utopica e delle sue conseguenze. Con una societá caratterizzata da un´etá media sempre piú alta, un altro capitolo nella storia della cittá sta giungengdo a termine. La nostra proposta vuole sfruttare quest´occasione per proporre di cristallizzare la memoria dello sforzo utopico con l´allagamento della zona dove sorgono gli edifici Olivetti. Trasformando un evento distruttivo in un´occasione salvifica, la vitalitá dell´acqua genera miraggi di quello che un tempo era un paesaggio utopico. Le sommitá degli edifici, ancora visibili sopra il livello dell´acqua, crea un arcipelago di monumenti in un lago di isolazione e protezione dall´influenza esterna.
