Architecture on the rooftops. An exploration into rooftops architecture and its potentials applications within postwar housing heritage by GPA Monti studio in Milan as a case study for European cities

In the city, the rooftop is the place to be. It is close to heaven, far above the din and smells of the city. There is nobody above you, meaning that you are king of the mountain. Elevated above the masses, you can survey what surely must be your domain. Notwithstanding many ideas which discuss the roof as a space capable of being lived on are scarce or almost non-existent; though, are those which deal with it from a constructional or typological point of view, with, recently, the bulk of those studying the green or ecological roof. But the roof is something more. To speak of a roof is to speak of usage, and that's the way ancient builders as well as contemporary architects have understood it. The research explored throughout this thesis has provided us with the opportunity to explore in greater depth the theoretical approaches of reappraising roofs through an analysis of built examples of post war residential heritage by GPA Monti Studio in Milan, in order to maintain the value and enhance the potentials of the building and the opportunities provided in the neighborhood scale.

In città, il tetto è il posto dove stare. È vicino al cielo, molto al di sopra del frastuono e degli odori della città. Non c'è nessuno sopra di te, nel senso che sei il re della montagna. Elevato sopra le masse, puoi esaminare quale sicuramente deve essere il tuo dominio. Nonostante molte idee che considerano il tetto come uno spazio che può essere vissuto, sono scarse o quasi inesistenti; tuttavia, sono quelli che lo affrontano da un punto di vista costruttivo o tipologico, con, di recente, la maggior parte di coloro che studiano il tetto verde o ecologico. Ma il tetto è qualcosa di più. Parlare di un tetto è parlare di utilizzo, ed è così che lo hanno capito gli antichi costruttori e gli architetti contemporanei. La ricerca esplorata nel corso di questa tesi ci ha offerto l'opportunità di esplorare in modo più approfondito gli approcci teorici della rivalutazione dei tetti attraverso un'analisi di esempi costruiti di patrimonio residenziale del dopoguerra da GPA Monti Studio a Milano, al fine di mantenere il valore e migliorare il potenzialità dell'edificio e opportunità fornite nella scala del vicinato.
