This thesis project is located in the south-east of France is the Alps Provence Region, in the canalised lower portion of the Var Valley along the Var river, which forms the west boundary of the municipality of Sainte –Maxime. The Var valley has over a period of time undergone many artificial developments, the most notable of which is the canalisation of its lower part in 1960. The action provided the city of Nice with wide plains of land where water once used to be. Over a period of time, these plains of the lower part of the Var valley have undergone many developments from agricultural fields to increasing urbanized areas as the city develops and expands. The most recent of these is the Eco Valley project proposed by the municipality in the Var Valley and the redevelopment of the tram way system. Research revealed that from as early as before the 1960s, the Var valley had a strong relation with agriculture which caused the river valley to work as one system of an unbroken space of fertile soils for agriculture and an easily accessed river. However, over the years, due to urbanisation of the valley and the presence of strong infrastructural interventions, the two sides of the valley have become broken up, the relation to the river indirect and the agricultural lands stand the risk of being completely erased in the future due to activities such as sports, commerce and industries. With this is mind, the strategy for the project is to create through a series of parks, activity areas which have an interrelation with each other on either side of the Var River with physical and visual connections which will tie the Var Valley together causing the Valley to once more be experienced as one space with a clearer relation to the river in the areas of the project intervention. The main focus of the project is the museum area which is placed centrally on the either side of the river and connected with a green bridge. The museum is developed as a series of spaces that celebrate agriculture by way of a hybrid open air and closed-space Agricultural Museum. On the west side of the river, the agricultural fields are largely preserved and the interventions on that side is interwoven with the existing function of agricultural farming in the area. The spaces on the west side of the river comprise of an open air museum with subtle view point towers where actively farmed agricultural fields are in themselves the exhibition, some artificial parks and the complementary space of the workshop and residential park. On this side of the project water is introduced as subtle engraves on the landscape which are sourced from the river and are used not only as landscape design elements but as practical water storage for the agricultural fields. On the east side of the river however, there are the stronger artificial interventions of the administration and culture centre as well as the museum exhibition system. On this side the earth is modified with reduction in ground level by 5 meters which is linked to the zero level by ramps and subtle walkway connection structures. Another prominent feature of the east side of the project is the practice farms which have been developed as a hands on experience of agriculture for visitors of the museum. On this side of the project also the presence of water is more strongly experiences as it serves as a continuous element that links all the spaces of the project sourced from a river, starting as a reservoir for the practice farms over which a portion of the culture and administration block is suspended on the zero level and continuing to the lower minus five level as one of the main means of circulation to experience the museum system by boat. The function of the spaces of the focus area on the west side include an office block where the administrative activities of the museum occur, a semi enclosed public auditorium, a library, a restaurant, a souvenir and info point which is accessed from the entrance building of the museum exhibition spaces, on the east, the functions include workshop areas and temporary residential areas for workers of the museum who many need temporary lodgings for exhibition events. Using the representation of light and water, elements found to be essential to agriculture, the museum exhibition spaces are developed as heavy enclosed spaces and light weight pavilions set within a landscaped area within modified soil levels to create various experiences of space for the users of the project area. The same theme is considered and applied also to the mode of circulation and experience of the museum spaces, with emphasis placed on the interactions between water, green landscaped areas and the museum exhibition buildings. This project intends, through the development of these spaces to create within the Var Valley a space which re-establishes the lost relation with the Var River while leaving a monument and memorial for agriculture which will remain even in the case of all traces of agriculture being erased from the Valley
