This thesis aims at the development and validation of a method for measuring the contact pressure in an ultrasonic welding machine installed in an automated diapers production line. Ultrasonic welding is an industrial technology that exploits high-frequency vibrations to create a solid part, starting from two workpieces maintained in contact by a static preload pressure. In order to obtain a high-quality weld, it is necessary to have a side seam with mechanical properties – mainly tensile strength - as homogeneous as possible in all its dimensions. In this perspective, the contact pressure plays a fundamental role since it enables the proper transmission of the vibration energy necessary to melt the materials at the interface between anvil and sonotrode. The contact pressure distribution on the welding surfaces needs therefore to be estimated with a cost-effective pressure measurement method. The absence of commercially available disposable devices led to the development and validation of an innovative method based on algorithms for pressure data acquisition and analysis. The experimental validation of the algorithms showed a measurement repeatability, expressed as the ratio between standard deviation and arithmetic mean, of 3%. The method was used to evaluate the effects on the pressure distribution of the anvil mounting and misalignment conditions, the thickness of the material to be welded and the applied preload.

Abstract
The method was used to evaluate the effects on the pressure distribution of the anvil mounting and misalignment conditions, the thickness of the material to be welded and the applied preload.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
