The object of this thesis is the structural analysis of a 40 ft racing catamaran, a type of boat achieving a lot of success in these recent years, thanks to the wide employment of well advanced engineering technology and materials. The first step of the work refers to the hull of the catamaran, for which a finite element model has been worked out in order to study the behaviour of the structure under different sailing conditions, able to define the composite material laminations suitable to grant the structural integrity within a set weight limit. The second step of the thesis is to implement the performance of the catamaran by replacing the traditional sail plan with a wing sail, of which the project analysis has been performed. Starting with a performance increase, an aerodynamic study has been worked out to define the load distribution acting on a finite element model of the structure, whose analysis have been performed to work out the laminations of the composite materials. The main pourpose of this second step is the definition of an engineering analysing method that starting from the aerodynamic study ends up with structural considerations suitable to be implemented within an optimization loop able to define the structural setting of the wing sail.

Abstract
The main pourpose of this second step is the definition of an engineering analysing method that starting from the aerodynamic study ends up with structural considerations suitable to be implemented within an optimization loop able to define the structural setting of the wing sail.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
