The “Società Umanitaria” is an historical complex located in the municipality of Milan which includes, in the same site, a system of cloister of XV century and, next to it, the extension designed by the architect Giovanni Romano between 1947 and 1956. Romano’s project is a valid example of the Milanese architecture from the Fifties. However, nowadays the area reveals to be outdated and not able to deal with contemporary needs. For these reasons the thesis here presented aims to the restoration and transformation of the site through the design activity. The thesis’ mainly focuses on the “Convitto”, the residential tower in Romano’s project, re-establishing its original program e re-interpreting its architecture considering its current state of decay, the new program and contemporary sustainability standards.
