Grocery supply chains have been studied for years for their importance and complexity, especially given their low marginality level. Overall, collaborative arrangements and supply chain synergies have been proposed to pursue cost reduction and optimisation. Despite that, many questions remained unsolved upon the role of third-party logistics (3PL) in supply chain collaboration (SCC) and how the latter is developed in a triadic rather than the traditional dyadic context. The present thesis aims at elaborating existing theory upon the arguments of SCC. Specifically, the role of the 3PL in facilitating and supporting value creation through collaboration was explored, focusing on the Italian grocery supply chain. First, a quantification of the logistics flows was conducted through a survey developed together with the Italian association GS1-Italy. Then, multiple case studies were instrumental to investigate collaborative solutions currently promoted by Italian 3PLs. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and triangulated with multiple data sources resulting from the interaction with multiple informants. Cases were focused on both dyadic and triadic frameworks, with special attention for the last ones. 41 interviews were overall conducted among 11 different cases. All 11 cases helped to uphold and/or update the panorama of collaborative modes, while 7 cases were instrumental to bridge literature gaps about triadic relationships and the role played by 3PL providers in chasing innovation and SCC. Their studying revealed a predominance of triad rather than dyad as setting of collaboration claiming the centrality of 3PL as key factor for collaboration. The research offers an exploration of the collaborative solutions within the Italian grocery supply chain, as well as a framework summarising the role played by 3PL to pursue chain innovation and collaboration in triadic networks. On one side, it broadens the current scope of literature research, proposing a new viewpoint on the approach that 3PLs have towards innovation management and splitting the general construct of collaboration in multiple and more detailed notions. On the other side, it might support 3PLs when screening new value-creation strategies, fostering the diffusion of innovative and collaborative practices while helping 3PLs’ clients to consider network related benefits in the selection process of 3PL providers.
Tutti i casi presi in considerazione illustrano strutture diadiche o triadiche, laddove queste ultime sono state ulteriormente approfondite.

Abstract
On the other side, it might support 3PLs when screening new value-creation strategies, fostering the diffusion of innovative and collaborative practices while helping 3PLs’ clients to consider network related benefits in the selection process of 3PL providers.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
