In the Retail sector, digital innovations are becoming fundamental to meet the customers’ needs in terms of a personalized and seamless experience. The interaction between retailers and start-ups, for their incredible innovative power, plays a crucial role in the introduction of digital innovations in this sector. However, the investigation of the Open Innovation mechanisms between these two actors to foster digital innovations is still at an early stage. This research tries to fill this literature gap, investigating which are the Open Innovation mechanisms used by retailers to engage with start-ups and which are the main digital technologies introduced by these interactions. In particular, 994 international start-ups with related solutions are analysed to understand which are the most provided technologies. Afterward, 51 retailers with related interactions with start-ups are classified, according to the Open Innovation mechanisms, objectives of the interactions and digital technologies involved. Finally, a comparison between the results of these two analysis is provided, evaluating the differences of the solutions provided by start-ups and the solutions involved in the interactions between retailers and start-ups.
Nel settore del Retail, le innovazioni digitali stanno diventando fondamentali per soddisfare i bisogni dei clienti, attraverso una fluida e personalizzata esperienza. L’interazione tra retailer e start-up, grazie alla loro incredibile forza di innovazione, gioca un ruolo cruciale nell’introduzione delle innovazioni digitali in questo settore. Tuttavia, l’indagine dei meccanismi di Open Innovation tra questi due attori, per favorire le innovazioni digitali, è ancora alla fase iniziale. Questa ricerca prova a colmare questa lacuna nella letteratura, indagando sia quali sono i meccanismi di Open Innovation usati dai retailer per interagire con le start-up, sia quali sono le principali tecnologie digitali introdotte da queste interazioni. In particolare, sono state analizzate 994 start-up a livello internazionale con le relative soluzioni per comprendere quali sono le tecnologie più fornite da esse. In seguito, 51 retailer con le relative interazioni con le start-up sono state classificate, secondo i meccanismi di Open Innovation, gli obiettivi delle interazioni e le tecnologie digitali coinvolte. Infine, i risultati di queste due analisi sono stati confrontati, valutando le differenze tra le soluzioni offerte dalle start-up e le soluzioni coinvolte nelle interazioni tra retailer e start-up.
