Purpose: Supply Chain Finance (SCF) in an emerging market as China represents one of the most effective tools to address the difficulties of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in improving the liquidity they require for daily working capital needs. As SCF in China involves heterogeneous actors, this Thesis tries to identify Business Model archetypes peculiar to the Chinese market. Design/methodology/approach: In order to cope with this purpose, a qualitative approach based on multiple case studies analysis has been adopted. The selection of providers’ categories and the definition of a detailed Research Framework based on the Business Model Canvas tool have been the preliminary steps that have allowed the analysis of relevant companies’ Business Model. Findings: Recurring characteristics in Chinese SCF providers’ Business Models have emerged and four archetypes have been identified. For each archetype a detailed Business Model Canvas has been drafted and deeply analysed, highlighting key differences among them. Research limitations/future directions: Future researches should be oriented to strengthen the consistency of the analysis through a broader sample of direct interviews and the study of documents available only in Chinese language. Theoretical and managerial implications: This study contributes at fulfilling the lack of a comprehensive and univocal categorization of Chinese SCF providers’ Business Models. The analysis of the identified archetypes have pointed out relevant considerations on the SCF business in China, enriching the existing academic literature. Moreover, the highlights on the strategic significance of SCF and the emergence of new providers in a fast-paced and changing environment such as the Chinese one can push more and more companies to evaluate the inclusion of SCF services in their business. Originality/value: The study of SCF in China can offer real and concrete learning points in this field as it is difficultly explored due to cultural and linguistic differences.
