Abstract
Given the remarkable importance that sustainability is assuming, addressing this concept in terms of supply chain management can represent a strategic decision for companies’ business. In particular, its growing relevance, associated to the visible and considerable impacts that organizations can have on planet and people, has pushed many companies to define sustainability not as an important value but as the important one. Studies have also highlighted this notion as an interesting business source of competitive advantage, which can allow supply chains to better compete on the market and also to differentiate from competitors. By adopting a cross-sector analysis, 19 case studies have been evaluated in order to understand how the two important concepts of Supply Chain Management and Sustainability interact with each other. Especially, the results have shown that companies which are really willing to become truly sustainable, cannot merely rely on practices implementations but they require a further step towards strategic supply chain changes. The investigation has identified six different paths which organizations can pursue to reach green objectives. This shows that strategic changes are not to be intended as silos but can be deployed simultaneously and in a synergic way by the same company to fully exploit their multiple benefits. A predominance among these paths emerged in terms of circular supply chain, since the layout explicitly embodies the notion of sustainability as main driver and results to be a flexible configuration, generating advantages also in other important aspects of a business. The framework that has been created not only enriches the literature in the above-mentioned fields but represents also a worthwhile scheme for managers in guiding them towards a truly sustainable change. Finally, it covers and provides an important focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, which are nowadays the main sustainable framework recognized and developed by firms.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
