Illustrare le atmosfere di un racconto letterario. Una teoria traduttiva per il paesaggio narrato

The objective of this Master’s thesis consists in demonstrating that a textual product can be translated into a visual product through the processing of a method, consequent to the study of modern semiotics studies and the structures of narrative texts. The investigation of the meanings of landscape perception was paramount, for which the knowledge of the professor of visual and environmental studies Giuliana Bruno and of the philosopher and professor Tonino Griffero were taken into consideration, with a hint on the Eastern conception of the landscape, exhibited by the philosopher and hellenist François Jullien. The learning of the theories of semiotics studies were crucial, in particular the studies of the semiologist and philosopher Charles Peirce, combined with the definitions of the linguist and semiologist Roman Jakobson. For the analysis of literary texts, the methods of the philologist and literary critic Cesare Segre and of the essayist and literary critic Roland Barthes were fundamental. Furthermore, the documentary photographers, such as Walker Evans, and the language of the great photographers of history, including Gabriele Basilico and Sebastião Salgado, have been a source of study and inspiration. This research phase led to the fulfillment of a visual translation, expressed through a photographic story, with the aim of faithfully reproducing literary meanings and paying particular attention to the emotionality.

L’obiettivo di questa tesi di Laurea Magistrale consiste nel dimostrare che un prodotto testuale può essere tradotto in un narrazione fotografica atmosferica tramite l’elaborazione di un metodo, conseguente allo studio della semiotica moderna e delle strutture dei testi narrativi. Di primaria importanza è stata l’indagine dei significati della percezione di un paesaggio, per i quali sono state prese in considerazione le conoscenze del professore di studi visivi ed ambientali Giuliana Bruno e del filosofo e professore Tonino Griffero, assieme ad un accenno sulla concezione orientale del paesaggio, esposta dal filosofo ed ellenista François Jullien. Determinante è stato l’apprendimento delle teorie della semiotica, in particolare gli studi del semiologo e filosofo Charles Peirce, accostati alle definizioni del linguista e semiologo Roman Jakobson. Per l’analisi dei testi letterari, sono stati fondamentali i metodi del filologo e critico letterario Cesare Segre e del saggista e critico letterario Roland Barthes. Fonte di studio e di ispirazione, inoltre, sono stati gli esponenti della fotografia documentaria, come Walker Evans, e il linguaggio dei grandi fotografi della storia, tra cui Gabriele Basilico e Sebastião Salgado. Questa fase di ricerca ha portato alla realizzazione di una traduzione visiva, espressa attraverso un racconto fotografico, con lo scopo di riportare fedelmente i significati letterari e vertere l’attenzione in modo particolare sull’emozionalità della percezione di un territorio.
