With growing social demands for quality public spaces, contemporary cities are struggling to find new approaches towards defining places that can accommodate the forming of urban communities. The purpose of this thesis is to look into the historical an contemporary social and urban contexts of the ‘city.’ It attempts to identify critical aspects that would allow to define strategic guidelines, which could suggest short/mid-term solutions to act as transitional interventions as part of broader urban planning methodologies. The thesis investigates the topic in three extents: the urban city scale (macro space), urban-human interrelation (meso space), and the psychological aspects of the human perception of the environment (micro space). This allows to gradually form a complex system of interconnected aspects, which define our urban environment, and which, in varying degree, contribute to our psychological anchoring to physical environments and the so-called ‘sense of place.’ Drawing relevant aspects from the investigation, the project ‘Urban X-Change’ aims to apply the insights into an urban regeneration project to reconnect two adjacent neighborhoods in Milano (Italy) - the previously industrialized neighborhood of Bovisa, and the historic neighborhood of Affori - into a fluid and integrated urban context. The project was developed together with Yara Chaker, Beatrice Malatesta and Kanika Pawar (project supervisor prof. Giovanna Piccinno), and aims to showcase a minimally physically disruptive, yet strongly impactful approach to urban regeneration and community integration.

Abstract
Giovanna Piccinno), and aims to showcase a minimally physically disruptive, yet strongly impactful approach to urban regeneration and community integration.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
