Through the design of public spaces, today, new perspectives for strengthening the public dimension of the contemporary city can be set, since, as has been pointed out, the city recognises itself as a community precisely in public space. In the People’s Republic of China, a community (社区shèqū), is an urban residential area, a synonym of ‘neighbourhood’, defining not only social relationships but also the urban fabric. The literature agrees with saying that people share a connection with places and the latter acquire a further meaning when it is designed starting from the needs of the people themselves. Therefore, the research aims to investigate how communities can contribute to the design of public space so that a link with the place itself is established and social dynamics are strengthened. A first analysis of the existing literature, trends and case studies to support research was carried out in order to get a complete outlook of the investigated topic. Then, the field research in a traditional Shanghainese Community Service Centre was conducted in order to collect the users’ opinions. The literature findings and user insights led the author to the generation of an urban interior design concept within the selected residential area, for the creation of a convivial public space where residents can gather to socialise or spend their time hanging out in-between the alleys. The design solution has been outlined according to the needs and desires of interviewees, with the aim to transform a simple passageway in a place with its identity that fully represents the values of the District in which it is located, that is establishing a community full of positive energy, harmony, auspiciousness and joy.

Abstract
The contemporary society, due to phenomena such as globalisation and urbanisation, is in transition and characterised by a widespread individualism; so, in this scenery, communities play an increasingly important role. Nonetheless, the rapid pace of urbanisation is progressively demolishing the traditional dwelling in most of the Chinese cities; moreover, research recognises that this effect on Shanghai is causing the crisis of traditional communities. The design solution has been outlined according to the needs and desires of interviewees, with the aim to transform a simple passageway in a place with its identity that fully represents the values of the District in which it is located, that is establishing a community full of positive energy, harmony, auspiciousness and joy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
