Increasing municipal solid waste is one of the major concerns plaguing low income and middle income countries around the world. Hence in growing economies like India, where Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) have been neglected for so long, now there is a greater need for addressing and overcoming these challenges. Though biodegradable wastes are the most among the municipal solid waste in India, the problem is, these relatively lesser plastic wastes are not mostly collected nor recycled and ends up spread around. Regular Indian eye is accustomed to this ill managed waste around them. One of the biggest hurdles for MSWM in India is in creating a pro environmental behaviour in the individual households level, for a cleaner environment and responsible participation in waste management. This thesis analyses the single use plastic waste generation in Kerala, a southern most tropical state in India and understands how pro environmental behaviour can be developed in the grass root level, by taking insights from Design for behavioural change theories and utilising them in a Service Design project context. The service system developed is utlising the existing neighbourhood collectives created by the people, together with local governments to bring a lasting behavioural change towards single use plastic use in the individual households of Kerala. The overall intention of the thesis is for developing a design proposal that would have social and environmental benefit through the disciplines of Service Design and Design for Behavior Change, specifically for single use plastic waste reduction in Kerala.

Abstract
The overall intention of the thesis is for developing a design proposal that would have social and environmental benefit through the disciplines of Service Design and Design for Behavior Change, specifically for single use plastic waste reduction in Kerala.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
