The Grotte di Catullo are the project area of ​​our thesis. The archaeological area is located on Lake Garda, more precisely, on the northern end of the Sirmione peninsula. The context that is proposed is already very suggestive in itself and certainly unique for its unusual strategic position and the set of visuals offered. In fact, it is surrounded on either side by the lake and its interesting scenery. Since ancient times this place has always been of fundamental importance, both from a landscape and geographical point of view, as a strategic point of connection for the lake routes. Even the less attentive gaze cannot fail to grasp the pervasive relationship between the two main elements that make up the image of this place: archeology (the villa) and landscape (the background). The archaeological site is set in a frame composed of a rich vegetation, specifically around 300 olive trees are the background to archeology. The site offers the possibility to relate to a very suggestive archeology, but which still today fails to offer its visitors the opportunity to relive the history of the Roman villa. Motivated by the possibility of a project aimed at enhancing a site of undisputed charm, we asked ourselves what was the strength of this place and what the Villa represented, in a search for architectural forms compatible not only with the place today, but also with what the place had represented in the past. We looked for an approach that looked at the Villa not only as a ruined architecture, but above all as the complex that once represented.

Le Grotte di Catullo sono l’area di progetto della nostra tesi. L’area archeologica si trova sul Lago di Garda, più precisamente, sull’estremità settentrionale della penisola di Sirmione. Il contesto che si propone è già di per sé molto suggestivo e sicuramente unico per la sua insolita posizione strategica e l’insieme delle visuali offerte. Infatti, essa, è circondata su tra lati dal lago e dalle sue interessanti scenografie. Fin dall’antichità questo luogo è sempre stato di fondamentale importanza, sia dal punto di vista paesaggistico sia geografico, in quanto punto di collegamento strategico per i percorsi lacustri. Anche lo sguardo meno attento non può non cogliere il permeante rapporto tra i due principali elementi che costituiscono l’immagine di questo luogo: l’archeologia (la villa) e il paesaggio (lo sfondo). Il sito archeologico è inserito in una cornice composta da una ricca vegetazione, nello specifico circa 300 ulivi fanno da sfondo all’archeologia. Il sito offre la possibilità di relazionarsi con un’archeologia molto suggestiva, ma che ancora oggi non riesce ad offrire ai suoi visitatori l’occasione di rivivere la storia della villa romana. Motivati dalla possibilità di un progetto volto alla valorizzazione di un sito dal fascino indiscusso, ci siamo interrogati su quale fosse la forza di questo luogo e su cosa la Villa rappresentasse, in una ricerca di forme architettoniche compatibili non solo con il luogo oggi, ma anche con quanto il luogo avesse rappresentato in passato. Abbiamo cercato un approccio che guardasse la Villa non solo come un’architettura in rovina, ma soprattutto come il complesso che un tempo rappresentava.
